'O' the Places You'll Go! Faculty/Staff Picnic Begins at 11 a.m.

MOOC Web Seminar Available in the Teaching and Technology Center Aug. 23

The Academic Partnership for Instruction (API) invites UNO faculty, staff, and students to a viewing of the Web seminar entitled, "The Impact of MOOCs in Higher Education," on Friday, August 23. The seminar will be broadcast in the Teaching and Technology Center (Kayser Hall 538) from Noon to 2 p.m.

Sponsored by the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and University of Nebraska Online Worldwide (UNOW), this session will feature a University of Pennsylvania professor's experience in designing, building, and teaching a MOOC (a Massive Open Online Course). A panel discussion focused on the impact of MOOCs on distance education follows and features perspectives from Mary Niemiec, UNOW Associate Vice President for Distance Education and Director, and UNMC administrators, professors, and students.

Department Tabling During Durango Days

Department tabling during Durango Days will occur as part of the All-Campus BBQ and Dessert Reception occurring on Sunday, Aug. 25, immediately following convocation. This will take place in the Sapp Fieldhouse, and we anticipate the event will last from about 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

To reserve a table for your department:
Please email mboseman@unomaha.edu with your department name and a contact person including their phone number for the day of the event.

Things to note:
Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse for departments to begin setting their tables
There will be no direct access to outlets for any of these tables
Tables will be assigned.

Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Women (CCSW) Seeking New Members

Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to join the UNO Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Women (CCSW). You can apply for membership by emailing your name and the reason you are interested in joining the commission to Nancy Castilow at ncastilow@unomaha.edu by Friday, August 30.

The CCSW serves as an advisory council to the chancellor and other university administrators on issues that relate to all faculty, staff and students. CCSW offers networking and professional development opportunities for members as well as an opportunity to positively impact women on the UNO campus.

We are seeking applications from all faculty, staff and students (regardless of gender) that would like to become members. Graduate and undergraduate students in any academic field are encouraged to apply. Faculty and staff are appointed for two-year terms, and students are appointed for one-year, renewable terms.

Parking Updates

Listed below are the UNO parking updates. If you have any questions, please contact Parking Services at 402.554.PARK (7275).

Open Parking Aug.12-25
There will be open parking on all UNO campuses through August 25. No permit will be required to park on surface lots or East and West Garages.

- Vehicles must park in white striped stalls.
- No Parking is allowed in drive aisles, fire lanes or cross-hatched area.
- Reserved, handicap and loading zone parking limited to authorized vehicles only.
- No payment is required to park at meters. Meters are intended for short term visitor parking. Please limit time you park at the meters.

On Monday, August 26, the start of the fall semester, new 2013-2014 parking permits must be displayed and standard parking regulations will be enforced.

East Parking Garage Security Camera Upgrades
All three levels (Lots T, U and V) of the East Parking Garage will have security cameras upgraded starting July 19 through August 20.
Portions of the parking stalls will be barricaded during installation of electrical/data conduit and cameras.

Maverick and University Village Move-in Traffic Notice
During residence hall move-in on Thursday, August 22, and Friday, August 23, traffic on University Drive South will be restricted to one-way (east bound) from the entrance of West Parking Garage (Lot J) to the west entrance of Lot M (south of Criss Library). Access will be open to West Garage and Child Care Center.

This road will be very congested in front of the residence halls during this time while students are unloading and moving into the resident halls. Parking and Security staff will be directing traffic.

Parking Permits Available for Online Purchase
Parking permits for the 2013-2014 academic year are now available for purchase online at www.unomaha.edu/parking/.

On the UNO Parking website, click MavPark. The site will require a NetID and password (same as your Blackboard login) and vehicle information for all vehicles parking on campus. Your vehicle information will include the vehicle's make, model, color, and license plate number. Before going online, please have this information available. Permits must be displayed beginning Monday, August 26.

UPDATE: Join Team UNO in the Omaha Corporate Cup Featuring the UNO Campus or Help Volunteer!

The 2013 American Lung Association Corporate Cup on Sunday, Sept. 15, will feature UNO in a big way--the 10K portion of the race will traverse UNO's Dodge and Pacific campuses as runners circle the area on their way to the finish line. The two-mile run will also pass by Mammel Hall, home of the UNO College of Business Administration. The remainder of the race will take place in Aksarben Village.

Housing Move-In Covered by KETV, WOWT
Sunday, Aug. 18, marked the first day of move-in for UNO students ahead of the 2013-2014 school year. Both WOWT and KETV were on hand to talk to students and parents about the process and expectations for the new school year.

Parnell to Lead Post-Show Discussion at Film Streams
On Monday, Aug. 19, the Omaha World-Herald previewed a pair of screenings by Film Streams and the Joslyn Art museum on the life of the famous French painter – Renoir. After both showings, Juliette Parnell, associate professor of French, will lead a discussion about the painter's life and the culture in which he lived.

UNO Hosts IT Academy for Professionals
On Monday, Aug. 19, the Omaha World-Herald ran a brief story on a pair of IT academies being held at the Peter Kiewit Institute on Thursday, Aug. 22, and Friday, Aug. 23.

Landow Comments on Governor's Race
On Monday, Aug. 19, the Omaha World-Herald ran a story on the topic of the upcoming Governor's race for the state of Nebraska. Many of the candidates are pointing to their rural roots as a political strategy. Paul Landow, assistant professor of political science, was quoted in the story.

UNO Sets Attendance Record for Soccer
On Sunday, Aug. 18, KVNO News reported on the men's soccer game exhibition against Big Ten defending champions Penn State. While the Mavs lost 1-0, the exhibition, which took place at South High School's Collins Stadium, set an attendance record of 2,581 fans.

Drozd Quoted on Gender/Poverty Split in Madison County
On Wednesday, Aug. 14, the Norfolk Daily News reported on the high discrepancy between men and women in poverty in Nebraska's Madison county. While the national average is 2.6 percent, the rate in Madison County is 7.6 percent. David Drozd, research coordinator for UNO's Center for Public Affairs Research, was quoted in the article.

Bowling League Members Sought

The UNO Faculty/Staff Bowling League for 2013-2014 gets rolling at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at West Lanes Bowling Alley (72nd and Dodge Streets). New teams and individuals who would like to be placed on a team are welcome regardless of skill level.

Teams may have more than four bowlers--18 years or older--on their rosters, but only four will bowl each week. Teams must have at least two UNO current or retired administrative/faculty/staff members which includes spouses, immediate family or significant others. Graduate teaching assistants are also eligible.

League bowlers unable to arrive at 4:30 p.m. each week have until the end of their team's fifth frame to join the first game of the evening.

Everyone is invited to learn more about the F/S Bowling League at an open house on Aug. 21 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at West Lanes. Stop in and bowl one FREE game (shoe rental not included).

HPER memberships for the 2013-14 academic year are now available online through payroll deduction. You can find the link to the registration form by visiting www.unomaha.edu/wwwocr or by going to https://orgsync.com/68441/forms/76158.

If this is your first time using MavSync, it will ask you to “Choose your Community” (University of Nebraska at Omaha). You will need to sign-in with your UNO ID, which is the same as email and blackboard login.
