Retirement Reception for Marilyn Brown Today

After 25 years with Business and Finance, Marilyn Brown is retiring today, August 1. Please join us in honoring and celebrating her many years of dedicated service to UNO.

A campus-wide reception will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center's Fireplace Lounge.

David Sample Named Employee of the Month for August

Oh, what a difference you make, David Sample! A facilities operator, Sample will be honored throughout the month of August for his work.

Praised by his nominators for taking pride in his work, Sample has been employed with UNO for 12 years.

According to his nominators, “Sample's work is professional quality, and he always goes that extra step.”

The nominator continued, “Sample is always polite and communicates very well with others. He is also willing to drop what he is doing to help any of his co-workers.”

When notified of his award, Sample said he was very surprised.

As Employee of the Month, Sample received a certificate, lapel pin, choice of coffee cup or drink cup, a monetary award and use of a parking space. He also received a portrait with the chancellor and a letter of congratulations. He will be honored at an upcoming meeting of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

Last January, Human Resources announced the updated Employee of the Month-- “Oh” Award for “Oh, what a difference you make!”--program for UNO staff members. HR administers the program in conjunction with the Office of the Chancellor and Staff Advisory Council. They welcome nominations from faculty, staff,students, vendors and visitors. API Offering GarageBand Class Aug. 9

The Academic Partnership for Instruction (API) will offer a 'GarageBand' class for faculty and staff on Friday, Aug. 9.

GarageBand is a free audio editing suite on the 'MAC OSX' system that can be used to create music, audio and image-enhanced podcasts, and video podcasts. This 'hands-on' introductory class will cover the basic processes for importing video, images, sound tracks, and recording and adding audio--then editing these multimedia resources to create video podcasts. The last part of the class will cover sharing, exporting the 'video podcast' for computer, DVD, and web playback.

Class will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon in Kayser Hall 543.

Lot W Closed for Construction Zone Access Through Aug. 2

Sidewalk replacement is scheduled between the main entrance on the north side of Arts and Sciences Hall and the south entrance to Kayser Hall. This construction project was scheduled from July 1-31. The construction has been extended through Friday, August 2.

Lot W, on the east side of Arts and Sciences Hall, will be closed during this project. Dump trucks, concrete trucks and construction equipment will be entering and exiting Lot W during the project.

Alternate parking for faculty and staff is available all day in the East Garage behind Arts and Sciences Hall.

Aviation Institute Partnering with Strategic Air & Space Museum for Hops, Props, and Wings Aug. 29

UNO's Aviation Institute is teaming up with the Strategic Air & Space Museum for their weekly Hops, Props, and Wings. Come out and learn more about what's going on at the Museum and Aviation Institute.

Purchase your tickets directly from the Aviation Institute and receive ½ price admission for adults. This is only available by purchasing your tickets in advance. The cost is $6 for adults and kids--this price is not valid at the museum, and Museum members receive free admission.

Cactus Hill will be performing. UNO alumnus, Scott Gaeta, is a member of the band.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

For tickets, stop by the Aviation Institute in CPACS 120 or call 402.554.3424. Tickets will also be available through Kailey Dwyer at the ConAgra Hangar.

The 2013 American Lung Association Corporate Cup on Sunday, September 15, will feature UNO in a big way--the 10K portion of the race will traverse UNO's Dodge and Pacific campuses as runners circle the area on their way to the finish line. The two-mile run will also pass by Mammel Hall, home of the UNO College of Business Administration. The remainder of the race will take place in Aksarben Village.

The Corporate Cup is among the largest of corporate road races in the United States, recently ranked 10th best 10K. From the first Corporate Cup in 1981, the event has experienced phenomenal success. In that first year, 29 companies entered and 681 runners crossed the finish line. In 2012, 262 companies entered with more than 11,000 registrants. UNO Community Engagement Center Profiled by World-Herald
On Wednesday, July 31, the new UNO Community Engagement Center was profiled by the Omaha World-Herald as it begins to take requests for partnerships. Sara Woods, assistant to the sr. vice chancellor for engagement, and Charley Reed, UNO media relations coordinator, were quoted in the article.

Kriz Cited in Story on Bellevue Feasibility Study
On Wednesday, July 31, the Bellevue Leader published a story about a records request regarding a new feasibility study for a hotel/conference center in the Twin Creek retail area. Kenneth Kriz, associate professor of public administration, was cited in the article for his work done in a similar feasibility study for the City of Gretna last year.

Kemp Talks Caniglia Field
On Tuesday, July 30, Mike Kemp, associate athletic director for events and facilities, discussed delays for the transformation of Caniglia Field from a football field to a soccer pitch. Originally scheduled for completion this month, back-to-back months of lots of wet weather have delayed the project until September.

Plan for the Fall with The New York Times

Faculty using The New York Times as required reading in their classes are eligible for free home delivery beginning in August, which also includes online and app-based access. Stipends are available for faculty members interested in working with the Newspapers in Curricula (NiC) group, which encourages incorporation of the newspaper in courses and sponsors current events discussions on campus.
