Dept. of Homeland Security Honors Pair of UNO Students

Two UNO graduate students were recently chosen to help fight the war on terror, thanks to their acceptance into a competitive program led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Dan Harris, a doctoral student in the industrial/organizational psychology program, and Quinn Guilds, a master’s student in criminology and criminal justice, have earned prestigious recognition from the National Consortium for Studies of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism.

'Get to Know the O!' During Durango Days

'Get to Know the O!' is the perfect opportunity for area businesses and students to interact with each other creating a win-win situation for everyone! The event provides a marketing platform for those businesses looking to engage the college market in the place where they play, work and learn. Last year more than 1,500 students attended!

How You Can Get Involved
Durango Days is looking for Omaha area business and organizations that are interested in marketing to UNO students with a booth at this year’s 'Get to Know the O!' You will have the opportunity to hand out samples, fliers, coupons, prizes and literature about your business.

Parking Updates

Listed below are the UNO Parking updates. If you have any questions, please contact Parking Services at 402.554.PARK (7275). You can also check the campus maps page and click 'Parking Maps' under Parking Services to view the lots.

Parking Permits Available for Online Purchase

Parking permits for the 2013-2014 academic year are now available for purchase online at www.unomaha.edu/parking/.

On the UNO Parking website, click MavPark. The site will require a NetID and password (same as your Blackboard login) and vehicle information for all vehicles parking on campus. Your vehicle information will include the vehicle's make, model, color, and license plate number. Before going online, please have this information available. Permits must be displayed beginning Monday, August 26, 2013.

Parking Services will mail permits on Wednesday, August 7, for all orders received by Wednesday, July 31. After July 31, online orders must be picked up at the following locations:

Monday, August 19 to Friday, August 23:
Eppley Administration Building: Auditorium

Monday, August 26 and Tuesday, August 27:
Milo Bail Student Center: 3rd Floor, Council Room

East Parking Garage Security Camera Upgrades
All three levels (Lots T, U and V) of the East Parking Garage will have security cameras upgraded starting July 19 through August 20. Portions of the parking stalls will be barricaded during installation of electrical/data conduit and cameras.

West Parking Garage, Lot K Closed for Maintenance
The West Garage and Lot K, in front of University Village Clubhouse and south of Weber Fine Arts Building, will be closed for stall painting from noon Friday, July 26 through Sunday July 28.

Parking is available in any surface lot (faculty, staff or student) during these times. Parking is not allowed on access roads, in reserve or handicap stalls (unless they display a valid handicap permit), fire lanes or drive aisles.

Nominations Sought for UNO Employee of the Month

Do you know a UNO employee who provides outstanding service to your department, the division or university as a whole? Why are you waiting? Nominate them for the 'Oh, What a Difference You Make!' Award (Employee of the Month) for office/service and managerial/professional staff. Nominations may be submitted by students, staff, faculty, visitors and administrators, and must meet the criteria listed below:
-Employed by UNO for one year or longer.
-Be in good standing.

Consideration includes:
- Performed job above and beyond expectations;
- Interpersonal skill/communication;
- Knowledge of job; and
- Adaptability.

-Recipients receive $200, “rock star” parking for that month, recognition and photograph with the Chancellor, recognition at the Board of Regents meeting, a lapel pin and beverage holder.
-An Employee of the Month qualifies to be selected as Employee of the Year.

To nominate an employee, print and complete the nomination form, and send it to Human Resources, EAB 205.

Gouttierre Profiled by World-Herald on Afghan Basketball
On Wednesday, July 24, the Omaha World-Herald profiled the work done in Afghanistan by Tom Gouttierre, dean of International Studies and Programs at UNO, as the head coach for the country's national basketball team in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Gouttierre was similarly profiled last week by Sports Illustrated.

UNO Alum Moves Technology Firm to Nation's Capital
On Wednesday, July 24, the Omaha World-Herald ran a story on Lisa Wolford, president of CSSS.NET, who is moving her company from Bellevue, Neb. to Washington, D.C. in hopes of securing government contracts that could benefit the state of Nebraska. Wolford is a graduate of UNO, starting her college career after serving in the Marine Corps.

UNO Alum Opens Manufacturing Company in Omaha
A story in the Wednesday, July 24, issue of the Omaha World-Herald covered the opening of a new manufacturing company, MTRL, which specializes in laser-cut furniture. One of the co-owners of the company is Josh Powell, a graduate of UNO's art and art history program, who opened the company with friend Nick Mauer.

As of July 16, 2013, the 2013-2014 Annual Salary Notification is accessible in Firefly via a link in ESS.

To access your salary notification in Firefly:
- Click the Employee Self Service tab.
- In the Payment section, click the Annual Salary Notification link.

The salary notification will open in PDF format. You can save it to your computer and/or print. Note: depending on your version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, the toolbar showing the print and save icons may not appear. To view the toolbar, press F8 on your keyboard.

This Annual Salary Notification link will remain in ESS until the following year and only the current year’s notification will be accessible.

Please contact the campus help desk if you have problems with Firefly or opening the PDF file. Please contact your supervisor if you have salary questions. Note: Annual salary notifications in ESS exclude AAUP members. Please contact your dean’s office with any questions.

Working on marketing materials this summer? The Office of University Communications has launched their new website here.

Visit the site to learn about the team, services, brand guidelines, media services, creative services and assistance related to marketing and media available to campus.

University Communications also launched updated UNO brand guidelines for all campus departments, offices and organizations to utilize when using the UNO brand and communicating on behalf of the University through marketing and promotional materials.
