UNO Flute Student, Flute Professor to Appear at Canadian Flute Convention
Leanna Keith, a junior flute performance major, will represent UNO at the first Canadian Flute Convention to be held at Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario, Canada from June 29-July 1, 2013. Selected through an international audition process, Keith will present a lecture-recital entitled, "East Meets West: Chinese Music for Flute." Her trip to Canada is being partially funded by a UNO student UCRCA grant. A preview of her presentation will take place at UNO on Saturday, June 22 at 2 p.m. in the Strauss PAC, Room 105. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
Keith was awarded a UNO student FUSE grant earlier this spring to work on learning to read Chinese music notation (a series of numbers and symbols unlike classical musical notation), locating resources, and then transcribing several Chinese tunes into western music notation for classical flutists to perform. In her presentation, Keith will discuss her sources, the transcription process, notational decisions, and she will perform examples on both the Chinese Dizi as well as the modern Western concert flute. Following the convention, her final product will result in a collection of songs to be published in a book so classical flutists can learn these Chinese traditional tunes.
Keith is a flute student of Dr. Christine Beard, professor of flute at UNO. An internationally recognized piccolo specialist, Beard is one of the invited headliner artists for the 2013 Canadian Flute Convention where she will be teaching a piccolo masterclass, playing piccolo on two chamber music concerts, and performing a solo recital of music for piccolo.
