Contemporary Folklore Class Offered This Summer
This summer, UNO's Goodrich Scholarship Program is offering "Contemporary Folklore," an online course taught by Dr. Todd Richardson that introduces students to the variety, resiliency and adaptability of folk expressions and traditions in the contemporary era.
Following a brief introduction to folklore and folklore studies, the course will identify and analyze the ways people make meaning in and through groups in 21st Century culture, emphasizing the ineradicable role of tradition in postmodernity. The course will introduce students to a variety of folklore genres, such as verbal art (tales, anecdotes, etc.), folk art, folk medicine, children's folklore (games, rhymes, etc.), folk beliefs (legends, conspiracies, ghostlore, etc.), foodways and customs (holidays, occupational lore, etc.).
Because the course will be entirely internet-mediated, special attention will be paid to digital and online folklore and folk communities, especially memes and fan art. The class will run from May 28 to June 28 and is open to all UNO students.
