UNO Celebrates a Festival of Colors

Thanks to great weather and lots of colored powder, UNO students and friends celebrated 'Holi,' the ancient Indian festival of colors on April 6. The event, which also welcomes the spring season, was sponsored by the Indian Student Association at UNO and took place at Maverick Village.

Faculty Senate to Meet Today

The UNO Faculty Senate will meet today, May 8, at 2 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Chancellor's Room

Newly elected senators will be taking their seats at this meeting, so current and newly elected senators should attend. All those interested are welcome to attend.

Milo Bail Student Center Announces Summer Hours

Summer hours for the Milo Bail Student Center, which run from May 6 through August 18, are as follows:

Sunday: 12 to 5 p.m.
Monday through Friday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Community Engagement Center Beam Available for Signing

Due to last week's inclement weather, the center beam for the Community Engagement Center remains available for signing until Friday, May 10.

The beam is located by the sidewalk in between the Campanile and the Criss Library.

The entire campus community is encouraged to stop by and autograph this piece of UNO history!

Nebraska Department of Labor to Offer Resume Assistance May 13

Representatives from the Nebraska Department of Labor will be at the Military and Veteran University Service Office (MaV USO) on Monday, May 13 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to help military and veteran students beef up their resumes and assist with job searches.

Please stop by the office, located in 117 EAB, and take advantage of this great resource.

The Nebraska Department of Labor is considering continuation of this service on UNO's campus pending the amount of business they receive.

UNO to Host Racquetball Tournament May 18

While many are tuned to the NBA and NHL playoffs, another kind of tournament will be going on in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) building on the UNO Dodge Campus.

Some of the best players in Nebraska will be on hand Saturday, May 18, for the tournament, which is being organized by UNO's Racquetball club.

The tournament will begin at 10:30 a.m. on May 18. Participants will compete in five categories: Men's, Men's Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Women's and Women's Doubles. Each category is separated into divisions of "Open," "A," "B" and "C."

The cost to attend is $25 for adults for the first event and $10 for a second event. The cost for students is $10 for the first event and $5 for the second event.Prizes will be awarded to division winners. Breakfast and lunch will be served for participating players.

Interested participants must register by Monday, May 13. To register, email unoraquetballclub@unomaha.edu.

Letras Y Voces Reading May 18

The Writer's Workshop and El Museo Latino present authors Connie Spittler and Marge Saiser reading from their work at El Museo Latino, 4701 South 25th Street in Omaha.

The public is invited to attend on Saturday, May 18, from 1 to 2 p.m.

The series continues throughout the summer. June's readers will be UNO's Ramon Guerra and Lakota author and journalist Chuck Trimble.

UNO Women's Athletics Golf Outing and Fundraiser May 31

The UNO Women's Soccer, Softball and Volleyball teams have combined to host the UNO Women's Athletics Golf Outing and Fundraiser, on Friday, May 31. All proceeds from the golf outing and fundraiser will directly benefit the teams.

The event will be held at Tiburon Golf Club, a beautiful 27-hole course. Maverick Soccer, Softball and Volleyball players and coaches will be on the course to greet you and talk about their upcoming seasons.

Required Reading to Begin Airing May 9

"Required Reading," a program that showcases UNO authors and their works, is set to air for the first time May 9 at 9 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on The Knowledge Network (Cox channel 18 and CenturyLink channel 66).

The first program features "Sky Harbor," a collection of poetry by Miles Waggener, faculty member of the University of Nebraska Omaha's Writer's Workshop; "Presidents and Civil Liberties from Wilson to Obama," a study of how American presidents have done in terms of advancing liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights by UNO Criminal Justice Professor Emeritus Sam Walker; and "Draping Period Costumes, Classical Greek to Victorian," by UNO Theatre Professor and Costume Designer Sharon Sobel.

"Required Reading" is a presentation from the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media and UNO Television.

Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium May 10

On Friday, May 10, the University of Nebraska Information Technology (UNIT) and University of Nebraska Online Worldwide are joining together to offer an education and technology symposium on the Innovations in Pedagogy and Technology. This symposium will feature nationally recognized speakers, presentations from University of Nebraska faculty, staff and administrators, concurrent sessions focused on emerging technologies, pedagogy/instructional design and support, roundtable discussions and networking time and vendor exhibits. Both a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The symposium will be held at the University of Nebraska−Lincoln City Campus, Union and Multicultural Center starting at 8 a.m. and is an expansion of the annual NU Technology Day.

Through Friday, May 10 there will be open parking on all UNO Campuses. Areas that will still be enforced by violation will be reserved stalls, handicap stalls, and fire lanes and driveways.

College of IS&T Round Table with Broes De Cat May 14

The UNO College of Information Science & Technology (IS&T) will welcome Broes De Cat to its round table discussion May 14. Broes De Cat will speak on the subject of "Recent Advances in Automated Search Algorithms."

Broes De Cat is a 2009 computer science graduate of KU Leuven, a research-intensive, internationally oriented university located in the heart of western Europe. His master's thesis focused on automatically adapting railway schedules in cases of unforeseen circumstances such as delays or material breakdown.

This talk will provide an overview of important developments in solving search problems and finding solutions to a given set of constraints. These involve integrating SAT with Constraint Programming and include lifting inference techniques to handle general input languages.

The roundtable will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 279 University of Nebraska Peter Kiewit Institute. Pizza will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The presentation starts promptly at noon.

NASA Nebraska Space Grant Now Accepting Applications

The NASA Nebraska Space Grant is accepting Fellowships and Mini-Grant applications from UNO faculty and students through May 15. These programs provide Nebraskans with the opportunity to pursue projects that have strong relevance to NASA

The NASA Nebraska Space Grant Fellowship Program provides Nebraska graduate and undergraduate students a chance to engage in student research related to NASA. Funding levels range from $500 to $5,000. Underrepresented women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. Faculty are eligible to apply for several types of Mini-Grants with different funding levels.

NASA EPSCoR Research: up to $20,000
NASA Space Grant Research: up to $5,000
Higher Education: up to $6,000

Informal Education: up to $3,000
