Seven Days Makes a Difference

Hundreds of volunteers from the UNO, Omaha and Council Bluffs communities participated in this year's Seven Days of Service. Now in its 11th year, Seven Days of Service uses the week designated for Spring Break to give back to the Omaha Metro area. This year volunteers provided assistance to area organizations like Habitat for Humanity, the Southern Sudan Community Association and Lauritzen Gardens.

Due to a system upgrade, MavCards will not be able to be used for purchases or deposits today, March 22, from 4 - 6 p.m. This includes both on and off-campus locations.

UNO Social Work Students to Assist at Black Health and Family Wellness Association Health Fair

Students from Professor Jaqueline Reiser's Social Work class will be partaking in the Black Health & Family Wellness Association Health Fair at North Magnet High School from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.

The students have been working collaboratively with Tonya Moore from the Nebraska Children’s Home to create activities for the youth who visit the Health Fair with their families.

HPER Spring Break Hours

The HPER building will have will have special hours through Sunday, March 24, for Spring Break.

The hours are:
• Saturday, March 23: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Sunday, March 24: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

There will be no Group Ex classes during spring break hours. The golf and archery lab is closed during spring break hours.

Criss Library Spring Break Hours

Criss Library Hours will offer different hours during spring break.

The hours are:
• Saturday, March 23: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Sunday, March 24 from noon to midnight

Regular library hours resume at 7 a.m. on Monday, March 25.

UNO Testing Center Announces Expanded Hours

The UNO Testing Center is announcing that the current hours of operation will be expanded. Beginning April 1, the UNO Testing Center will be opening a half hour earlier every day. The new hours of operation will be from 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The expanded hours will allow testing candidates more flexibility while scheduling to take an exam at the Testing Center.

UNO Brings Local, Regional Startups at Midwest Entrepreneurship Conference

The creative minds behind eCreamery, Battle Bears, Complete Nutrition and many other successful start-up companies will be on hand for the Second Annual Midwest Entrepreneurship Conference (MWEC), sponsored by several organizations within the University of Nebraska at Omaha's (UNO) College of Business Administration (CBA).

The MWEC will be held at the KANEKO, 1111 Jones St., on Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6. The event is organized by UNO’s Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) and Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Franchising (CIEF). Read more.

Third Annual Maverick Business Plan Competition to be Held April 17

The next big thing could already be right here in Omaha.

On Wednesday, April 17, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) College of Business Administration (CBA); UNO Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Franchising (CIEF); and SAC Federal Credit Union are hosting the Third Annual Maverick Business Plan competition.

The Maverick Business Plan competition places proposals for potential business and not-for-profit organizations against each other in order to see which idea is the most likely to succeed. Proposals are expected to outline the idea, the market, the competition and competitive advantages, as well as a general understanding of how the firm will operate and generate a profit.

The competition will run from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Mammel Hall on UNO’s Pacific Campus, with Jeff Beals, the award-winning author of “Selling Saturdays: Blue Chip Sales Tips from College Football,” as the Master of Ceremonies. Read more.

KIOS Previews Sen. Nelson Lecture at UNO
In early 2013, former Sen. Ben Nelson was named "politician in residence" for the UNO Political Science Dept. His first lecture in the roll will be on Thursday, March 28. KIOS spoke with Sen. Nelson recently to discuss the appoitnment.

Hobbs Speaks on Behalf of Juvenile Justice Institute
On Thursday, March 21, state lawmakers voted to overhaul Nebraska's juvenile justice policies. Ann Hobbs, director of UNO's Juvenile Justice Institute, spoke in favor of reform before the vote. The story was covered by the Lincoln Journal Star.

Gershovich on Becka
On Wednesday, March 20, Moshe Gershovich, professor of history and director of UNO's Schwalb Center, was a guest on the Tom Becka Show to discuss President Barack Obama's visit to Israel this week.

Alpha Xi Delta
UNO Sorority Alpha Xi Delta will be sponsoring an Easter Egg Hunt at Lake Zorinsky at 9 a.m. on March 30. The event was previewed by the Omaha World-Herald.

Sustr Headed for NHL
UNO junior defenseman Andrej Sustr is forgoing his senior year with the men's hockey team to consider offers from several NHL teams. Depending on the team Sustr signs with, he could play with the NHL this season.

Drozd Mentioned in Norfolk Daily News
On the heels of Grand Island being redesignated as a metropolitan area, Norfolk has become Nebraska's second largest micropolitan area. David Drozd, research coordinator for UNO's Center for Public Affairs Research, was mentioned in the artcle. Drozd works closely with census data to measure population statistics across the state.

CCSW to Honor Contributions of Women at Luncheon March 27

The achievements and contributions of women from UNO and around the metro will be celebrated at the UNO Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Women (CCSW) Spring 2013 Awards Luncheon this month.

The luncheon will take place Wednesday, March 27 at 11:30 a.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom. All members of the UNO and Omaha communities are encouraged to attend.

The highlight of the night will be the unveiling of the fourth annual Legendary Woman Award, which will honor an exceptional woman who was part of the UNO community during the first half of the 1940s. Read more.

CCSW Fundraising Drive for Emergency Loan Fund (ELF) Raffle March 27

The Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Women (CCSW) is organizing two events this spring to raise funds for employees who encounter unexpected financial hardships. The first is a raffle.

A few of the raffle prizes are:

• Four (4) club-level UNO hockey tickets for a single game in the 2013-2014 season and one garage parking pass for the game;
• A UNO print by Artist Kathi Kubik Geringer
• A surprise Borsheims gift;
• And a Leahy Mall photo (11 x 14) by retired UNO photographer Tim Fitzgerald.

Raffle winners will be announced at the CCSW Awards Luncheon on March 27. Raffle tickets cost $5 each or three for $10.

In 2010, UNO established a fund for employees that have an unexpected financial hardship. Employees can apply to receive an interest-free loan of up to $750 to be repaid one year through payroll deduction. This fund is supported purely through private donations, and the need has surpassed the funding.

Office of Academic and Student Affairs Host Millennial Generation Discussions April 5

The Office of Academic and Student Affairs will host discussions about the views and experiences of 18-30 year-olds (also known as "Millennials"), on Friday, April 5. The event will begin at 3 p.m. in the CPACS Collaborating Commons (132 and 132D CPACS) and another discussion will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the UNO-KANEKO Library located at 1111 Jones Street. The night's featured guest will be David Burstein, author of Fast Future: How the Millennial Generation is Shaping our World.

Register for the 2013 UNO Claussen-Leahy Run/Walk

Get registered for the UNO Claussen-Leahy Run/Walk, Saturday, April 20, at Stinson Park in Aksarben Village. This year's events include 5K and 2K runs, and an 800 meter kids' race and walk. The run/walk will benefit all UNO student-athletes and athletic programs.

The Claussen-Leahy Run/Walk was an outgrowth of the highly successful UNO/Diet Pepsi Women's Walk, an event held for 26 years as the marquee fundraiser for women's athletic scholarships. The Women's Walk began in 1986 by current assistant athletic director Connie Claussen and became the largest fundraiser of its kind in NCAA athletics, raising $4 million dollars over its history.

The grand total raised from the 2012 Claussen-Leahy Run/Walk was more than $200,000 and involved more than 850 participants.
