Students make their way back to campus as classes resume today, Jan. 7, with the start of the 2013 Spring semester at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The semester ends with the last day of classes on April 26 and commencement on May.

Total Compensation Statements for 2012 Available

Total Compensation Statements for 2012 are now available for all benefits-eligible faculty and staff at Firefly - Employee Self Service in the Payment section. The Total Compensation Statement is a comprehensive overview of your earnings and benefits. The University of Nebraska provides this information. Your total compensation includes much more than your annual earnings, as it also includes valuable incentives such as health, retirement, leave and other benefits.

Fund for Undergraduate Scholarly Experiences Grants Available; Q&A Sessions Today, Tomorrow

The Office of Research and Creative Activity (ORCA) is pleased to announce the Fund for Undergraduate Scholarly Experiences (FUSE). FUSE grants support faculty-mentored undergraduate student research and creative activity.  Deadline for submissions is Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013! If students are interested in applying for FUSE funding, please attend one of two Q&A sessions scheduled for this week:

- The first will take place today, Jan. 10, in the Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC) State Room from noon to 12:45 p.m.

- The second will be held this Friday, Jan. 11, from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in the MBSC Jenkins Room.

Popcorn and light refreshments will be served.

Grants of up to $2,500 per student are available to UNO undergraduates. Faculty need not be tenured or tenure-track to participate as mentors. ORCA encourages students and faculty from all disciplines to participate in this exciting opportunity to promote student involvement in research and creative activity at UNO.

Holocaust Exhibit Opens at Criss Library

UNO and the Council for Holocaust and Genocide Studies are excited to announce the opening of "Future, Beware," a Holocaust photography exhibit which runs through Friday, Feb. 22, along with three accompanying lectures this month. There will be an opening reception hosted by the UNO Department of History tonight, Jan. 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The exhibit, which features work by Omaha's Ophir Palmon, visually chronicles an exploration of Holocaust sites in Poland and Israel by Jewish-American teens. The photographs will be on display in the Osborne Family Gallery on the first floor of the Criss Library on UNO's Dodge Campus. Read more.

Flu Vaccine Available at Student Health Services

Health Services staff encourages faculty, staff and students to get vaccinated this year for the seasonal flu.

Douglas County Health Department reports flu cases have been well above average this year, and have struck earlier than usual. There has been no deaths reported for Douglas County but Lancaster County (Lincoln) has had an adult and child die. Neither one was immunized.

Douglas County has had 515 cases reported. Officials say that if you haven't already gotten a flu shot, you should get one as soon as possible.

Health Services is receiving another shipment of the flu vaccine this week. Health Services, located in Health, Physical Education atrium, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

The cost for the UNO community:

- Faculty and staff: $20 cash or $30 if you want to submit it to your insurance

- Student: $15 cash or $30 if it is submitted to your insurance

Fan Voting Open For Hobey; Walters a Frontrunner

Durango

Fans of UNO hockey are encouraged to vote for junior left wing Ryan Walters in the first phase of fan ballotting for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award, given each year to the top player in Division I college hockey.

Fan voting opened Jan. 7 at the official Hobey Baker Award website, http://www.hobeybakeraward.com, and will remain open until Sunday, March 10. The second phase of fan voting, which begins on Friday, March 22, will include the top 10 finalists for the award. Fan voting accounts for one percent of the total ballot in each phase of the process.

Walters is one of 77 players nominated for the award.  He leads the WCHA and the country with 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points, all career highs.  He is averaging 1.50 points-per-game to rank fourth in the country.  His goal total leads the NCAA.  He has now scored points in six straight games (5-4-9) and has points in 14 of the last 15 games (13-17-30). Faculty Art Exhibition Opens Jan. 11

A UNO faculty exhibition will open 2013 for the UNO Art Gallery.

The showcase will feature recent works in many media including painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital gaming and more from 18 visual artists on the faculty of the UNO Department of Art and Art History.

The public is invited to an opening reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 11. The exhibition will run through Thursday, Feb. 14. Read more.

'Killing Spaces:  Understanding the Holocaust from a Spatial Perspective' Lecture on Jan. 14

Dr. Waitman Beorn, assistant professor of History, and Louis and Frances Blumkin, professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, will present a lecture on "Killing Spaces:  Understanding the Holocaust from a Spatial Perspective" to the Geography/Geology Department on Monday, Jan. 14, at 3 p.m. in 110 Durham Science Center. All UNO faculty, students, and staff welcome.

Silo Ice Climbing Trip Jan. 19

Join the UNO Outdoor Venture Center for a day of ice climbing on man-made ice in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. All equipment and transportation is provided.

Participants must dress warmly in layers that allow freedom and movement. Outdoor Venture Center staff recommends that you pack a lunch and water, snacks and hot beverages are for sale on site. No experience is necessary; participants must be at least 18 years old to go on trip. Nominations Sought for 2013 CCSW Awards

The Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Women (CCSW) seeks nominations for its Outstanding Achievement Award, Community Service Award and Scholarship Award. These awards recognize individuals and organizations at UNO and in the metropolitan community who have brought attention to women's issues, advanced women's issues and/or gender equity issues.

This year's recipients will be honored Wednesday, March 27, at the CCSW Awards Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC) Ballroom. Tickets will go on sale at the MBSC Business Office closer to the date.

CCSW will also honor a student scholarship award winner at the luncheon. To apply UNO students must meet the following qualifications: be an undergraduate who will graduate after fall 2013 and student must show significant contributions towards: (1) addressing improving the status of women or gender issues at UNO in their academic work or activities and/or (2) have academic excellence in fields where women are underrepresented.

Imani Participates in Wayne, Neb. MLK Event

Nikitah Imani, chair of the Department of Black Studies, was mentioned in a story in the Wayne Herald on Thursday, Jan. 3, about Wayne State College's Martin Luther King Jr. Days of Service events. On Jan. 21 Imani will be the keynote speaker during a special MLK Jr. Celebration organized by the college's Multicultural Affairs office.

IPD Graduates Mentioned in Midlands Business Journal

The Midlands Business Journal noted the graduation of 12 professional students, from five different countries, from UNO's International Professional Development program. The students graduated in mid-December. 

Knopp Presents at KANEKO

Lisa Knopp, associate professor of English, was mentioned in a brief preview in the Omaha World-Herald of a noon reading she gave on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at the KANEK-UNO Library in downtown Omaha.

Gouttierre Quoted in Story on Hagel Defense Secretary Nod

Tom Gouttierre, dean of International Studies and Programs, was quoted in a story from the Omaha World-Herald about how Nebraskans are reacting the nomination of former Sen. Chuck Hagel for U.S. Secretary of Defense.

Lot 8 Shuttle Bus Stop Closing Announced

The shuttle bus stop in Lot 8, west of Scott Residence Hall, will be permanently closed on Monday, Jan. 21. Alternate stops are available in nearby Lot 5, north of Mammel Hall, and Lots 9 and 14, north of Scott Court Resident Halls.

This change is being made to improve efficiency of the shuttle bus service between the Dodge and Pacific campuses. A joint study by Student Government and Parking Services showed this stop is underutilized and unnecessarily extends the overall time of this route.

Now Accepting Applications--5th Annual Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The Office of Research and Creative Activity at UNO is pleased to accept applications for the 5th Annual Student Research and Creative Activity Fair. The Fair will take place on Friday, March 8, 2013, in the Milo Bail Student Center.

All UNO students (undergraduate and graduate) and Engineering students from the Pacific Street campus are encouraged to apply. Registration materials are available at http://www.unomaha.edu/orca/rcaf.php.

Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013.
