Signage at UNO

Monumental 'O' Signage at UNO

Passers by may have noticed the new 'O' monument signage on both Dodge and Pacific Campus. Both locations recently received the new Wayfinding signage. Wayfinding is the new signage that will be placed throughout UNO in order to assist newcomers in finding their way through campus. Another component in the near future to the 'O' monument signs will be a digital message board.

Christensen to Present State-of-the-University Address Today

Chancellor John Christensen will deliver his annual state-of-the-university address today, Sept 19.

Christensen is expected to discuss UNO's efforts to build capacity, implementation of an enrollment management plan, and strategic priorities across the campus, as well as progress on long-range goals. He will also discuss UNO's recent enrollment numbers and campus accomplishments during the past year.

Today's address begins at 10 a.m. at the Strauss Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. UNO faculty, staff, students and the public are invited to attend the free event. A reception at the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom will immediately follow Christensen's remarks.

Single Game Hockey Tickets On Sale Today


The UNO Ticket Office announced that single-game tickets for all hockey games through Dec. 15 go on sale today, Sept. 19, beginning at 10 a.m.

Tickets may be purchased in person at the CenturyLink Center box office and the Sapp Fieldhouse box office on the UNO campus. They also can be purchased online at and Read more.

Co-founders of Home Instead Senior Care to Discuss Work With Elders at Today's Chuck Powell Lecture

The UNO Department of Gerontology's annual Dr. Chuck Powell Memorial Lecture Series will feature a husband-and-wife team of guest speakers again today, Sept. 19.

Paul Hogan and Lori Hogan, co-founders of Home Instead Senior Care, will speak at the UNO College of Public Affairs and Community Service Commons. On Sept. 7, Paul Hogan discussed how to pair entrepreneurship and the aging population. Today, from 1 to 2 p.m., Lori Hogan will discuss how to prepare for a job after college and what employers are looking for in prospective employees. Read more.

Cinemateca Returns This Evening at Film Streams

The biennial Cinemateca film series, presented by Film Streams and the UNO Office of Latino/Latin American Studies, continues tonight, Sept. 19, with a screening of Aurora Guerrero's "Mosquita y Mari," which runs through Sept. 20. Read more.

UNO Named Top Military Friendly School for Fourth Consecutive Year

G.I. Jobs magazine has named UNO one of its top Military Friendly Schools for 2013.

UNO, for the fourth consecutive year, received the honor from the magazine and is among the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that embrace America's veterans as students.

The honor recognizes UNO's continued effort to support military and veteran students and their families. One major element of that effort began earlier this year with the opening of UNO's first one-stop office for military and veteran students known as MaV USO (Military and Veteran University Services Office).  Read more.

Study Abroad Fair Sept. 26

UNO's Fall 2012 Study Abroad Fair will feature dozens of opportunities for students to study and serve overseas, including new programs in Eastern Europe and India.

Students should stop by the Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC) Plaza Wednesday, Sept. 26, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Trip leaders and program providers will showcase a wide variety of experiences; students can travel for 10 days, a semester, or a year, on their own or in a group, in almost any academic field. Whether students are studying a foreign language or business, social work or the arts, there's sure to be a trip that suits them.

In case of inclement weather, the fair will be held in the MBSC Dodge Room.

Retirement Reception for Bob Harris Sept. 28

UNO's Human Resources invite faculty and staff to join HR's Payroll Department in celebrating Bob Harris' retirement. After 40 years of service to the university, Bob Harris, manager of Payroll, will be retiring from UNO at the end of September.

To honor his decades of service, a campus-wide reception is set for Friday, Sept. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Nebraska Room. Coworkers describe Harris as "Patient, kind, gentle, helpful and loyal. Please join HR in honoring and celebrating his many years of dedicated service to UNO.

Volunteers Sought for Girl Scouts

Girl Scout's Outreach Department brings Girl Scout leadership programming to underserved girls in Omaha and is looking for volunteers. Volunteers facilitate pre-planned activities for girls for one-hour per week. Activities are centered around teamwork, community action and leadership.

"Volunteering with the Girl Scouts is a great way to inspire and mentor girls through fun, hands-on learning," said Sheena Kennedy, outreach specialist for Girl Scouts. "We're looking for volunteers to work with our elementary, middle, or high school aged groups. We ask that volunteers sign up for at least a 7-week commitment."

'Build Your Online Course' Workshop Tomorrow

A teaching online workshop titled "Build Your Online Course" is planned for Thursday, Sept. 20, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in 541 Kayser Hall. At the workshop attendees can work with the tools being demonstrated if they wish.

Dawn Cripe, Jody Neathery-Castro, and Karen Falconer Al-Hindi will each demonstrate a tool she uses in her online Women General Studies class. Technical support will be available. The workshop is open to everyone at UNO, and is co-sponsored by the Center for Faculty Development.

Speech Center to Offer Fall Lunch & Learn Series for Students

Need help with a class presentation, or a speech for your organization? Attend the UNO Speech Center Learn Over Lunch Series. The UNO Speech Center will offer free workshops this semester on presentation skills. All students are invited to attend. Free pizza and pop will be provided while you learn to improve your presentation skills.

Fund for Undergraduate Scholarly Experiences Grants Available

The Office of Research and Creative Activity (ORCA) is pleased to announce the Fund for Undergraduate Scholarly Experiences (FUSE). FUSE grants support faculty-mentored undergraduate student research and creative activity.

Grants of up to $2,500 per student are available to UNO undergraduates who will be enrolled through fall semester 2013. Faculty need not be tenured or tenure-track to participate as mentors. ORCA encourages students and faculty from all disciplines to participate in this exciting opportunity to promote student involvement in research and creative activity at UNO. The deadline is Thursday, Oct. 18.
