UNO's newest residence hall, Scott Court, opened its doors to residents Sunday (Aug. 14) on the Pacific Street campus. Students are taking part this week in a variety of fun activities before classes start on Monday.

Shirley Fey Retirement Reception Tonight at Alumni

A reception for Shirley Fey of the UNO Athletic Department, who after 25 years is retiring, will be held tonight, Aug. 15, at the Thompson Alumni Center from 5 to 7 p.m.

"Her duties have changed over the years, but her passion, dedication and loyalty have remained the same," a colleague wrote. "She is always willing to help others, as we all help each other on many projects and events held in the Athletic Department."

Since 1977, Fey has been a key component of UNO Athletics. She was a member of the original Diet Pepsi/Women's Walk founding team and has provided assistance for UNO hockey program since 1997, when the program was developed.

2012-13 Parking Permit Sales – Purchase Online Now

Parking permits for the 2012-13 academic year are now available to purchase online at http://www.unomaha.edu/parking/, click on MavPark.

The site will require a NetID username and password (same as your Blackboard login) and vehicle information on vehicles owned that will be parking on campus.  This information includes the vehicle's year, make, model, color and license plate number.  Before going online, have this information available.

Parking permits ordered online must be picked up at the following locations:

Eppley Administration Building – Auditorium:                        
Tuesday, Aug. 14 to Friday, Aug. 17;
* Aug. 14: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Aug. 15-17: 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Milo Bail Student Center – Council Room (third floor):              
Monday, Aug. 20 to Friday, Aug. 24
* Aug. 20-23: 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
* Aug. 24: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The attached "flyer" provides updates on parking services for fall 2012.

2012-13 Parking Permits must be displayed by Monday, Aug. 20, 2012.

Members Sought for CCSW

The Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Women (CCSW) seeks applications from faculty, staff and students who are interested in becoming members. Graduate and undergraduate students in any academic field are encouraged to submit an application.

The CCSW serves as an advisory council to the chancellor and other university administrators on issues relating to all faculty, staff and students. Through participation, CCSW offers networking opportunities for members across UNO's campus.

Activities this past year included:

- Presented Susan B. Anthony Coffeehouse Series lectures on future self and women of the world;

- Promoted civic awareness through voter registration drives;

- Hosted the 26th annual CCSW Awards luncheon;

- Sponsored a CCSW undergraduate scholarship; and

- Participated in activities honoring inclusion for all, Women's History Month and the Claussen-Leahy Run/Walk for Athletics.

Faculty and staff are appointed for two-year terms, and students are appointed for one-year, renewable terms. To apply for membership, individuals should e-mail their name, the reason they are interested in joining the commission and any relevant experience to Nancy Castilow at ncastilow@unomaha.edu.

Changes to UNO's Wireless Network Announced

In an effort to improve wireless security on the UNO campus, a new wireless network, UNOSecure, will be activated on Monday, Aug. 13. The UNOSecure network will be available to faculty, staff and students and require a login to connect (only once for each device using your Net ID username and password - aka Blackboard/Office 365).

For guest to the UNO campus, the UNOGuest network will be implemented and limited to a basic Internet connection. The existing UNOWireless network will remain available for guest access but will be discontinued during the holiday break in December.

UNO Theatre to Hold Auditions for Fall 2012 Season

The UNO Department of Theatre is holding auditions for the Fall 2012 Season. UNO students, alumni and actors at large are invited to audition.

Upcoming mainstage productions include: William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, directed by D. Scott Glasser and Mary Zimmerman's Mirror of the Invisible World, directed by Cindy Melby Phaneuf.

Community auditions will be held on Sunday, Aug. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 21, 8 to 9:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held in 333 Weber Fine Arts Building. Prepared monologues are encouraged; however monologues and scenes will be available for reading. Read more.

2nd Annual Freshman Convocation Set for Aug. 24

One of UNO's newest traditions, Freshman Convocation is planned for noon on Friday, Aug. 24, inside the Sapp Fieldhouse.

The event will feature a 45-minute ceremony that officially welcomes UNO's freshman class, with remarks from Chancellor John Christensen, as well as other campus administrators and student leaders. Families of the freshman are also invited to attend.

Freshmen will receive a commemorative lapel pin marking the occasion. The students will be encouraged to wear the pin at a number of campus events throughout their academic career at UNO, including graduation.

The convocation is designed to be a ritual that signals the beginning of a student's college experience that will culminate at the graduation ceremony, marking the end of their undergraduate career.

A reception for the students, their families, and UNO faculty and staff will follow in the Milo Bail Student Center.

UNO Aviation Institute Loening Trophy Presentation Next Week

Mark your calendar. The Loening Trophy will be presented to the UNO Aviation Institute Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Thompson Alumni Center. Chancellor John Christensen will also present the Flight Team with a special recognition. The trophy will be awarded at 3 p.m., followed by a reception. 

The Loening Trophy was first awarded in 1929 as a perpetual trophy to be presented annually to the outstanding all- around collegiate aviation program.  You can learn more about the history of the Loening Trophy, and R.S.V.P. online at http://ai.unomaha.edu/loening.php.

UNO Participants Sought for Aug. 25 Methodist Hospital/UNO Women's Triathlon

If you've ever wanted to participate in a triathlon, the Methodist Hospital/UNO Women's Triathlon is the perfect place to start. Join other area women on Saturday, Aug. 25, for the 8 a.m. triathlon at Wehrspann Lake and Chalco Hills Recreation Area, 8901 S. 154th St.

"This is a fun, noncompetitive introduction to the sport—no rigorous training required. We won't be recording your times or giving awards, so the pressure's off," said Todd Samland, UNO head women's swimming & diving coach and event organizer. "It's all about participating in a fun fitness event for women of all ages—so bring your mom, your daughter, or your best friend and try the sport!"

The entry fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt. All proceeds from the event go towards UNO's swimming and diving team.
