Nebraska Biomechanics Core Facility Hosts Global Participants

submitted photo

Scientists and clinicians from all over the world traveled to Omaha recently for an intense five-day sumer workshop. Why? The scientists at the Nebraska Biomechanics Core Facility (NBCF) are considered experts in a certain analysis of human movement and biological systems. Their approach is unconventional and this makes them world-renowned for their research using nonlinear analysis. Individuals from Australia, Denmark, Spain and Ireland traveled to the NBCF. In addition, 12 more individuals from all over the United States were in attendance. They came from places such as the National Institutes of Health, the West Point Military Academy, and the Johns Hopkins University and the University of California San Francisco. These 18 attendees underwent a grueling schedule of lectures, hands-on training and testing from 9 to 5 p.m. each day. In the evenings, the NBCF staff hosted several social events. By hosting these types of workshops, the NBCF helps place the University of Nebraska at Omaha on the map, scientifically speaking.

Changes to UNO's Wireless Network

In an effort to improve wireless security on the UNO campus, a new wireless network, UNOSecure, will be activated today, Aug. 13. The UNOSecure network will be available to faculty, staff and students and require a login to connect (only once for each device using your Net ID username and password - aka Blackboard/Office 365).

For guest to the UNO campus, the UNOGuest network will be implemented and limited to a basic Internet connection. The existing UNOWireless network will remain available for guest access but will be discontinued during the holiday break in December.

New Portuguese Language Course Available This Fall

This fall semester, for the first time ever, UNO will offer a course in Portuguese. The primary language of Brazil has become increasingly important to people worldwide as that country's cultural influence grows and it becomes a major market in international trade.

Portuguese is also very accessible for students who know some Spanish; with a little extra effort, they can communicate effectively throughout all of Latin America.

FLNG 2530: Portuguese for Spanish Speakers will be offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1 to 1:50 p.m. Students will need to have taken SPAN 3030: Conversation and Pronunciation and SPAN 3040: Grammar and Composition as pre-requisites. Students can also enroll with advisor permission if they are native or heritage speakers of Spanish.

The instructor, a native Portuguese speaker, will be visiting UNO from Brazil through the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant program. Each year, UNO hosts Fulbright FLTAs to teach critical languages for students seeking careers with international facets.

Depending on demand for this course, Portuguese may become a permanent offering.

For more information on the Portuguese course, contact Melanie Bloom, chair of the Foreign Languages & Literature Department, 402.554.4989. For more information about the Fulbright FLTA program, contact Shane Pekny in International Studies & Programs, 402.554.2376.
