Hayden House

Heydays of the Hayden House

On Oct. 8, 2010, UNO's new Welcome Center was unveiled with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Around $1 million had been invested in restoring what had most recently been the home of the Goodrich Program. With the renovation of the former-Engineering building to make-way for the new College of Public Affairs and Community Service (CPACS) building, Goodrich had new home and something needed to be done with a building that, frankly, had too much history to get rid of. continue. . .

Wednesday Words Reading Series Continues This Afternoon

Spend the lunch hour today, Aug. 8, with Wednesday Words: The Braided River reading series at its new location, KANEKO's KANEKO-UNO Library, 1111 Jones St., in Omaha's Old Market District.

Beginning in June, the reading series, which is free and open to the public, started holding events at KANEKO-UNO Library, with an inaugural reading by William Trowbridge, Missouri's Poet Laureate.

This month's featured writer is Rex Walton. He will read from his works today from noon to 1 p.m. Walton has been a writer and poet for more than four decades. During that time, he has written hundreds of books of poetry and prose. Recently in Midwest magazines, among them the Rocky Mountain Review, Plainsong, and Plains Song Review, as well as the Middlewesterner, an online collection of views. Walton has worked with numerous writers in Nebraska with workshop presentations, most recently -- "Writers Write!" -- through the Nebraska Literary Heritage Association. He also runs the Reading Series weekly at Crescent Moon Coffee in Lincoln.

Wednesday Words originated in the fall of 2009 as a special reading series featuring award-winning writers from the Nebraska Arts Council's (NAC) Individual Artist Fellowship (IAF) in Literature program. It has developed into an ongoing reading series recognizing award-winning writers from Nebraska, including NAC's IAF honorees. The reading series is sponsored by the Nebraska Arts Council, The Backwaters Press, KANEKO-UNO Library and J.D. Hutton.

Blackboard Facelift Scheduled for Aug. 13

Blackboard will be unavailable on Monday, Aug. 13, from 6 a.m. to approximately noon to install Service Pack 9 (SP9). Please be aware that, prior to noon, there may be intermittent connectivity due to system testing as Blackboard is brought back online.

This virtual facelift will not affect the functionality of Blackboard. The tools and features students and faculty have grown accustomed to will remain the same; however, the upgrade includes a few additional options for faculty in areas such as the grade center and a new text editor. The most significant impact of the upgrade, and the one you will notice immediately, will be the look and feel of Blackboard. The user interface has been updated to a more modern theme in order to enhance usability.  Additional enhancements include course-to-course navigation, automatic regrading in tests/quizzes, and applying negative points to questions within tests.

To get a closer look at these improvements and more:

- Attend an Information Services (IS) webinar Aug. 14 at noon. Simply go to http://unoconnect.adobeconnect.com/bbsp9bb and click on Enter as a Guest.  No registration is required.

- Review the updated Blackboard Help section on the API Website (http://api.unomaha.edu/blackboard/bb9main.php).  This information can also be accessed by clicking the Help icon within Blackboard.

- Go to Upgrade Central (http://upgradecentral.unomaha.edu).

- Review this brief Blackboard video highlighting the new themes and interface.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact IS Technical Support at 402.554.4357 (HELP) or email unohelpdesk@unomaha.edu.
