The Henningson Memorial Campanile: UNO's Icon
With how iconic the Henningson Memorial Campanile is to the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus, it's sometimes easy to forget (or, for others, forget to ask) that the 16-story bell tower isn't even old enough to graduate at commencement this May. continue . . .

UNO to Participate in 2012 Metro Commuter Challenge
From Monday, July 9, through Friday, Aug. 3, metro area employees can take the bus or carpool to work, log those trips and get good stuff for doing so. GreenUNO encourages the UNO community to participate in this community sustainability initiative. The 2012 Metro Commuter Challenge is designed to reward more than just those who take alternative transportation regularly.
The challenge is sponsored by the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) and Metro Transit. MAPA offers a free on-line carpool matching service for employees in the metro area, and Metro Transit's bus system stretches from West Omaha to downtown.
If you're not familiar with alternative transportation, GreenUNO encourages you to try it the whole month, a week or even a single day.
- Taking alternative transportation helps keep the air clean. Right now, Omaha's air quality is close to reaching non-attainment of federal standards. That could mean heavy fines for Omaha.
- Commuting to work by alternative transportation saves people up to $2500 each year.
- If you participate in the challenge even once you'll be eligible to win a gift certificate to restaurants such as Old Chicago, Upstream and M's Pub.
Here's how it works:
Register: Sign up for the challenge online at http://www.mapacog.org/commuterchallenge.
Log commutes: Enter each alternative transportation trip you take on a simple calendar. For this challenge, MAPA is focusing on bus and carpool, but participants can get bonus points for walking/riding your bike to the bus stop or carpool.
Get stuff: And by stuff, MAPA means good stuff. Anyone who participates can win gift cards to area restaurants in the weekly raffle. The three individuals with the most commutes, and the three with the most miles traveled, get either an iPad, $100 Visa gift card or a Joslyn family membership. And this competition isn't just about the individual. Companies with the most commutes and miles per participant receive bragging rights and a plaque.
Find out how to try Metro Rideshare or Metro Transit, learn about all the competition details and register on the challenge website at http://www.mapacog.org/commuterchallenge.
