Commencement ceremonies began Friday afternoon at Caniglia Field with a commencement address by former senator Chuck Hagel and an honorary degree to Dick Holland, the Chancellor's Medal to Dr. Ethel Williams and the Citation for Alumni Achievement to Robert Houston. Diplomas were given out Friday evening in the Fieldhouse to graduate students and on Saturday in the Pep Bowl, the back yard of the Alumni Center, at PKI and Mammel Hall.
May 8, 1935: Omaha University Adopts 'Indians' as Nickname

On this day in UNO history, Omaha University students voted 257 to 16 to adopt 'Indians' as the university's new nickname. The mascot, Ouampi, would be ousted in 1971 when UNO would adopt 'Mavericks' as its new nickname.
UNO, Millard Students Celebrate Karen Community

On Wednesday, May 2 students from Kristin Girten's Gender and Cultural Studies course and Millard North Middle School gathered at the City Sprouts Community Garden to celebrate the end of a semester-long service learning project aimed at helping Omaha's Karen refugee community.
HR to Offer Performance Evaluation Training
Human Resources (HR) will offer two training sessions on performance evaluations for those who supervise staff members. HR staff will send notifications to supervisors about managerial employee evaluations, which are due by Friday, May 14.
The training goal is to provide an opportunity to refresh or learn new procedures and skills. The new evaluation form and procedures, as well as the best practices for conducting the performance evaluation process and meeting, will be reviewed.
HR staff hopes those new to UNO and new to supervision will find the discussion with more experienced colleagues helpful and important to their success as supervisors.

MavCard System Downtime Scheduled for Today
The MavCard System will be unavailable today, May 8, due to an upgrade. MavCard users will not be able to use MavCards to make purchases in Food Services, the Bookstore, computer labs, vending machines, off-campus merchants or any other areas where the MavCard is accepted. However, MavCards will be able to be used for door access, entrance into Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building and Criss Library book checkout.

Inclusion: Diversity Reconsidered Workshop Takes Place Today
The Inclusion: Diversity Reconsidered workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 8, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Milo Bail Student Center Dodge Room. All faculty and staff are invited to participate in this campus wide discussion of "inclusive excellence" with keynote speaker William T. Lewis, senior vice president for Diversity and Inclusion from Virginia Tech. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served, so registration is required.

Jones Named a Contributing Editor of artland
Peggy Jones, an assistant professor in the Department of Black Studies and a member of the Women's and Gender Studies faculty, has been named a contributing editor for a new arts magazine - artland.
The magazine launched in April. The magazine’s mission is to create and promote a community of artists and arts organizations by providing a forum for dialogue and news. It will be given free to members of UNL’s Sheldon Art Association and will available for purchase for $4.95.Up to Top

Middle and High School Students Sought for IT Workshops
All middle and high school students can join UNO;s College of Information Science & Technology for the 2012 Summer IT Workshops at the Peter Kiewit Institute. A variety of computer technology topics, including Mobile to App Development, Intro to Adobe Flash and Digital Music Synthesis, will be offered in six, one-week sessions from June 6 through July 29.
