Flag Lowering

The UNO flag will be lowered to half-staff today, May 2, in honor of UNO retiree June (Floyd) Turner. She passed away April 27 at age 69.

Turner, a secretary in the Department of Criminal Justice, retired in 2010 after more than 25 years of service to the university.

There will be an 11 a.m. Memorial Service today, May 2, at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home & Crematory, 1221 N. 16th St., in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Read more.

UNO, MNMS, City Sprouts Join Forces Today to Help Karen Community

Students from the UNO Department of English, the UNO Women's and Gender Studies Program and Millard North Middle School (MNMS) will work together at City Sprouts today, May 2, as the culmination of a semester-long P-16 service learning experience.

Today the students, together with members of the Omaha Karen refugee community, will host a potluck dinner and theater performance, based on interviews with Karen families, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will also feature a raffle to benefit the Karen community's effort to build a community center. A work from artist Watie White, director of the Omaha Print Makers Guild, will be featured in the auction.

Both events will take place at City Sprouts, 4002 Seward St., one of Omaha's oldest community gardens.

This semester UNO students and MNMS seventh graders have learned from the Karen community while exploring creativity and cultural sustainability in writing, visual arts, gardening and verbatim theater. Read more.

Brass Quintet to Perform Historical, Contemporary Music Tonight

The UNO Faculty Brass Quintet will perform a special recital tonight, May 2, at the Strauss Performing Arts Center Recital Hall at 7 p.m.

The event, called "Dance Music Through the Ages: From Galliard to Gaga" will feature members of the UNO Department of Music faculty playing works from well-known composers including everyone from John Phillip Sousa and Johannes Brahms to Stevie Wonder and Lady Gaga. Read more.

Spring Commencement Set-up Parking Lot Closings – Today

Set-up for the "graduation weekend" ceremonies start today, May 2.

The following lots or portions of these parking lots will be closed early this morning and remain closed until set-up is completed:

* Lot O, southeast of HPER; Lot R, animal care loading zone, southeast of Allwine Hall; Lot X, south and west row of stalls, south of Alumni Center; Lot 2, south row of stalls, north of PKI; and Lot 5, southeast corner, north of Mammel Hall.

'Graduation Weekend' Parking Lot Closings and Reservations – Friday & Saturday

Various parking lots will be closed or reserved for handicap and VIP parking during "graduation weekend."

The following lots or portions of these lots will be closed Friday, May 4:

* Lot O, southwest of HPER; Lot R, between Allwine Hall and CPACS; Lot N, west of HPER; Lot Q, west of CPACS; Lot V, west one-third of upper level of East Garage, behind Arts and Sciences Hall; and Lot H, three stalls in northwest corner, north of Child Care.

The following lots or portions of these lots will be closed Saturday, May 5:

* Lot O, southwest of HPER; Lot R, between Allwine Hall and CPACS;  Lot V, northwest corner of upper level of East Garage, behind Arts and Sciences Hall; Lot H, three stalls in northwest corner, north of Child Care; Lot X, at Alumni Center;  Lot U, northwest corner of middle level of East Garage, behind Arts and Sciences Hall; Lot 2, south and part of central row of stalls, north of PKI;  Lot 5, east half, north or Mammel Hall;  and Lot 15, northwest of Mammel Hall.

In the event of inclement weather, the venue of several ceremonies will change to UNO's Fieldhouse, HPER and Milo Bail Student Center. If so, parking lot closings will impede Lots E, N, O, R and U.

Juice Stop Walk This Friday on Campus

Wellness Stampede

Campus Recreation will host a Juice Stop Walk on campus to celebrate the 100-day challenge finale this Friday, May 4, at noon. Walkers will meet in front of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Building.

Before leaving for the walk the top two teams in each division (weight loss and physical activity) will be recognized. Please note that everyone is responsible for paying for their own Juice Stop. The cost is $3 and $5.

MavCard System Downtime Scheduled for May 8

The MavCard System will be unavailable Tuesday, May 8, due to an upgrade. MavCard users will not be able to use your MavCard to make purchases in Food Services, the Bookstore, computer labs, vending machines, off-campus merchants or any other areas where the MavCard is accepted. However, MavCards will be able to be used for door access, entrance into Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building and Criss Library book checkout.

Academic Partnership for Instruction Announces May Blackboard 9.1 Workshop

The Academic Partnership for Instruction (API), a Division of Information Services (IS), will be offering a series of workshops designed to teach faculty about ways to use Blackboard 9.1 to enhance student learning.  Workshops begin on Monday, May 7, and run through Friday, May 11.
