Arts and Sciences Hall: UNO's Cornerstone

Before the University of Nebraska at Omaha was even truly a campus, let alone part of the University of Nebraska system, almost all of its classes were held in what is today known as Arts and Sciences Hall. HR Launches New A-Z Index for Benefits Information

Human Resources recently launched a new A-Z index for benefits information at UNO. The A-Z Benefits Index features links to websites, forms and information related to benefits providers, services and processes. The index is located at: http://www.unomaha.edu/humanresources/A-ZIndex_unoempbenefits.php

"Faculty and staff looking for information or forms should be able to easily find what they need because items that may have more than one name are listed under several possible variations," said Esther Scarpello, Fringe Benefits manager at UNO.

The index also combines information from UNO's website, SAPPHIRE and the University's central NUFlex site.

Best-Selling Author Alex Kava to Speak at UNO

The UNO Library Friends will host a Book Discussion and signing of Alex Kava's new release, HOTWIRE, on Thursday, July 28. The program will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Thompson Alumni Center.

Kava is an international bestselling suspense writer. Her works have been widely praised by critics and fans alike and have spent several weeks on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. Kava lives in Omaha and Pensacola, Fla. The public is invited to attend.

Flood Relief Workshop for Local Businesses is July 27 at UNO

Nebraska and Iowa business owners, county, city and state officials who have been impacted by the recent flooding – and those businesses that can offer support to flood victims in Nebraska and Iowa – are encouraged to attend a free workshop on Wednesday, July 27, at UNO.

The seminar on flood recovery contracting and subcontracting runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the Thompson Alumni Center. Read more.

Campus Rec to Offer Women's Self-Defense Summer Workshop This Week

This event has been designated a UNO Mav-Rec Wellness event.

Tim Gorham, an instructor from Six Point Self-Defense, will conduct a new two-day workshop for women at the Health, Physical Education & Recreation (HPER) Building this week. Participants will learn the basics of self-defense including a basic fight stance, different strikes and where to use them, ground assault defense, defending a car assault and choke defense. Women in the workshop will also learn to be more aware of their surroundings.

This summer workshop will be offered this Tuesday and Thursday, July 26 and 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. both evenings.

Registration is $25 for students, $35 for Mav Rec Members, $50 for Faculty/Staff (non-members,) and $75 for the public. Registration forms can be filled out at the HPER Control Desk.

No Entry Fee Announced for UNO's Corporate Cycling Challenge Team

This event has been designated a UNO Mav-Rec Wellness event.

UNO will field another cycling team for the 21st Annual Corporate Cycling Challenge to be held Sunday, Aug. 21, beginning at Heartland of America Park, 8th and Douglas. New this year, Human Resources will cover the entry fee for UNO employees. The registration deadline is Friday, July 31.

"UNO has had significant representation at this event and with the fee waived and opening it up to family members we are hoping to continue the tradition with a much larger showing at this year's event," said Mike Grube, team captain and IT specialist for Support Services.

The waived fee only applies to people on the UNO payroll, including full- and part-time faculty and staff, adjunct faculty, graduate assistants and student workers. Spouses, significant others and children can participate for a $5 per person entry fee.

UNO participants can choose from several routes, distances and start times:

  • Olde River Ride, 10 miles, 9 a.m.
  • Riverside Ride, 25 miles, 8:30 a.m.
  • Tour De Fort, 42 miles, 8 a.m.

UNO participants can sign up by returning the following packet (http://www.corporatecycling.com/Employee_Packet.pdf) to "Mike Grube in EAB 208N." The packet includes a waiver form that participants need to complete, as well as indicate their shirt size and riding distance choices. Everyone who returns a completed waiver will receive a free UNO Athletics T-shirt. Participants may also choose to purchase this year's official Corporate Cycling Challenge T-shirt for $10, proceeds of which are used for trail development in the Omaha Metropolitan area.
