Arts and Sciences Hall: UNO's Cornerstone
Before the University of Nebraska at Omaha was even truly a campus, let alone part of the University of Nebraska system, almost all of its classes were held in what is today known as Arts and Sciences Hall. Flag Lowering
The UNO flag will be lowered to half-staff Friday, July 22, in honor of part-time instructor Martin "Marty" McDaniel. He passed away July 16 at the age of 55.
At UNO, Rev. McDaniel taught on a part-time basis for Religious Studies and Continuing Studies. He had been with the university for more than 10 years. Since 2006, he had served as pastor for the United Presbyterian Church in Boyden, Iowa.
Visitation with the family is tonight, July 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Roby Funeral Home, 346 Avenue A, in Plattsmouth, Neb. A 10:30 a.m. service will be held Friday, July 22, at Murray Presbyterian Church, 105 W. Main St., in Murray, Neb.

present a two-part program titled "The Life of Harold Dow: A Consider This ... Special," airing statewide this month on

The UNO Library Friends will host a Book Discussion and signing of Alex Kava's
new release, HOTWIRE,
on Thursday, July 28. The program will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the
Thompson Alumni Center.
Alex Kava is an international bestselling suspense writer. Her works have been
widely praised by critics and fans alike and have spent several weeks on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller
lists. Kava lives in Omaha and Pensacola, Florida. The public is invited to attend.

Want to know what graduating undergraduate students are saying about UNO? Get a
glimpse into this kind of data courtesy of the Department of Institutional
Research.
Each year UNO asks its graduating seniors to complete a short exit survey. The
survey focuses on several key areas that are used to better understand the
student experience at UNO.
This year's data collection was a joint effort between Student Enrollment
Services and Office of Institutional Research.
Key sections of the survey include:
*Overall satisfaction with UNO and the student's academic preparation;
*Post-graduation plans;
*Employment during the past year while attending UNO;
*Experiences of non-traditional and transfer students at UNO;
*Assessment of involvement with active and service learning;
*Campus engagement; and
*Feedback on "likes" and "areas of improvement."
The Survey Profile Report on the Baccalaureate Degree Graduates Exit Survey was

Bike Omaha Commuter Challenge Now Underway
Looking for an excuse to get back on a bicycle? Need
motivation to get more exercise? Want to reduce dependency on oil while saving
money? Team UNO is looking for faculty and staff (including students employed
by UNO) to participate in this year's Bike Omaha Commuter Challenge.
The Challenge started May 1 and ends Oct. 1. Anyone can join anytime during
this period and any amount of bike-to-work commuting counts (both miles and
number of trips). There are no meetings to attend, no practice required and
plenty of bike parking available. For the past three
years UNO has come in first place in its division in the city.

Summer Hours Under Way at Campus Food Service
Campus summer food service hours are now set. Currently, the Milo Bail Student Center's American Grill, Greenfields, D'café, Grab & Go and Tomasittos are open from 7 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Library Cafe and MavRec Cafe are now keeping the same 7 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday schedule.
