Arts and Sciences Hall: UNO's Cornerstone

Before the University of Nebraska at Omaha was even truly a campus, let alone part of the University of Nebraska system, almost all of its classes were held in what is today known as Arts and Sciences Hall. Opened for classes in 1938, the building that started it all will hit the 75th anniversary of its approval later this year and its diamond anniversary for construction next summer. continue . . .

UNO Hockey Releases 2011-12 Schedule

Durango

The UNO hockey team will play its 15th season and its second in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association beginning with back-to-back tournaments in October.  The contests are part of the 36-game schedule for the 2011-12 season released yesterday.

"Our debut in the WCHA last year exceeded all expectations," said Trev Alberts, UNO's Director of Athletics.  "We had yet another 20-win season, finished third in the league standings and earned our second-ever berth in the NCAA playoffs. Dean Blais and his staff have a list of great accomplishments in their first two seasons together and with another strong recruiting class, we think they'll only add to that list in the upcoming season." Mav-Rec Wellness and Human Resources Offers Smoking Cessation Program

Wellness Stampede

This event has been designated a UNO Mav-Rec Wellness event.

Members of the campus community who want to quit smoking can join UNO Mav-Rec Wellness for "BEAT THE PACK." There is still a five-week cessation program left. The Mav-Rec Wellness is funding the program so UNO employees only need to pay $10 out of pocket.

"This in-house program will provide peer support and useful information to assist you in this life change; including what medications and treatments your insurance provider covers," said Dave Daniels, assistant director for fitness/wellness and instructional programs at UNO.

The cost to attend the five-week session is just $10. The lunch session meets at noon on Thursday, July 21 and 28, as well as Aug. 4, 11 and 18. All classes will be held in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building.

"This program would cost $250 a person if the individual had to pay for it out of pocket," Daniels said. "If an individual smokes a pack-a-day, quitting would save him or her $1,500 a year. $10 vs. $250 (or $1,500)...what a deal."

Registration information is available online at http://www.unomaha.edu/wwwocr/beatthepack or by emailing Daniels at daviddaniels@unomaha.edu.

The mission of Mav-Rec Wellness, UNO's health promotion program, is to create a culture of health and wellness among all faculty, staff and students. Health goals are encouraged through programming and initiatives that celebrate healthier lifestyle practices within the UNO community. HPER Building to be Host Site for WalkOmaha This Saturday

Wellness Stampede

This event has been designated a UNO Mav-Rec Wellness event.

One of the most popular Cornhusker State Games (CSG) sports every year is a non-competitive event called Volkswalk. The term, originally called Volksmarch, comes from Germany where everyone would gather and walk a 10-Kilometer course for exercise, fellowship and fun. The Germans realized the benefits of making exercise social and fun.

With growing participation in the Omaha area, Cornhusker State Games officials decided to begin hosting a Volkswalk in Omaha to allow metro-area residents to enjoy this simple, but meaningful experience in the convenience of their own community. The Omaha version has been appropriately titled "WalkOmaha," and offers all the same Cornhusker State Games perks as the Lincoln edition.

Each participant receives a Cornhusker State Games shirt, yearbook, meal/admission pass for the opening ceremonies and all finishers receive a commemorative medallion.

This year's WalkOmaha course will start and finish at UNO's Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Building and incorporates the trails of beautiful and historic midtown Omaha. The event takes place Saturday, July 23, and participants can complete the course any time between 7 a.m. and noon. Along the route, there will be trivia questions, and walkers can find clues to answer the questions.

WalkOmaha is a great way to experience the Cornhusker State Games. Entries will be accepted on site but participants can register online, as well. Details and registration are available at http://www.cornhuskerStateGames.com.

The mission of Mav-Rec Wellness, UNO's health promotion program, is to create a culture of health and wellness among all faculty, staff and students. Health goals are encouraged through programming and initiatives that celebrate healthier lifestyle practices within the UNO community.
