June 29 marked the official opening of the Elmwood Fitness Park. The exercise area, located in Elmwood Park, is the result of hard work by recent UNO graduates Michaela Schenkelberg, Emily Casne and April Proskovec.

NU Appoints Mary Paulett Niemiec to Lead Online Education Efforts
University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken announced July 5 that Mary Paulett Niemiec has been appointed as NU's associate vice president for distance education and director of University of Nebraska Online Worldwide. Niemiec currently serves as executive director of external education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she is responsible for developing, directing and promoting the university's online, blended and professional development programs.
Niemiec's appointment at NU begins Aug. 15. She will provide leadership in achieving the broad goals of University of Nebraska Online Worldwide, the university-wide distance education platform that has experienced significant growth since it was launched in 2010. Read more.Up to Top
Teens to Clean, Wash, Massive Locomotives at Lauritzen Gardens
High school students taking part in UNO's SummerWorks program will spend Thursday, July 7, at Lauritzen Gardens, but they won't be mowing, weeding or gardening. Their project will be more like a car wash . . . an extremely big car wash.
The SummerWorks students will work alongside Lauritzen Gardens volunteers and staff as they clean two mammoth locomotives -- Big Boy No. 4023 and Centennial No. 6900. Training will begin at 9:30 a.m. with cleaning expected to be completed by 2:30 p.m. Participants will be using ladders and scrub brushes to give the locomotives a thorough foam bath. Shakespeare on the Green Continues on Stage Tonight
This year marks the 25th birthday celebration for Nebraska Shakespeare and William Shakespeare's 447th birthday. Shakespeare on the Green returns to Elmwood Park with Hamlet and A Midsummer Night's Dream this summer. Hamlet runs tonight, July 7 and 9. A Midsummer Night's Dream runs July 8 and 10.
The two professional productions are free to the many thousands of supporters who attend the family friendly and magical experience. Many arrive early with picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs to get a good spot "on the green."
Activities start at 6 p.m. at the Towne Square, featuring live music, concessions, souvenirs and an educational "Shakesperience." Attend the nightly pre-show seminars where artists and scholars gather to meet the audience and discuss Shakespeare's text, current productions and relevant contemporary topics at 6:30 p.m. Read more.Up to Top
'Consider This' Investigates Violent Video Games and Kids
On the next edition of "Consider This," host Cathy Wyatt and guests investigate violent video games and kids. Who makes them, sells them, buys them and monitors them? And, what are the consequences?
Wyatt shares expert advice from a gamer and child psychiatrist: Dale Miller, founder of Gamers and Dr. Howard Liu, child psychiatrist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
The program airs on NET today, July 7, at 11 p.m. and Sunday, July 10, at 11:30 a.m.

HR to Offer Summer Wellness Videos

This summer Human Resources will be sponsoring two wellness seminars.

* Obesity in a bottle: Understanding Liquid Calories and Nutrition – Aug. 10
The format for each seminar will be a short video and then a question and answer session. The video will be shown at 10 a.m. then repeated at 10:30 a.m.
Information will also be available at each seminar on the new My Plate (formerly My Pyramid) nutrition guide and website.

Mileage Reimbursement Rate Reminder
Effective with travel occurring on or after July 1, 2011, all mileage reimbursements for approved travel by personal automobile will be at the rate of fifty-five and one half cents ($.555) per mile as established by the IRS. The previous rate (January 1, 2011 to June 20, 2011) rate was fifty-one cents ($.51) per mile.
This rate should also be used when reimbursing visiting personnel or students for their travel. UNO's mileage reimbursement policy can be found at http://www.unomaha.edu/acctserv/Mileage.php.

Parking Closing Notice for Shakespeare on the Green
Several parking stalls will be unavailable on performance dates near this summer's Shakespeare on the Green site in Elmwood Park, adjacent to UNO on the Dodge Location. Signs and barricades will be posted.
2011 Shakespeare on the Green performance dates:
Designated stalls will be closed all day long so stalls can be reserved for performance nights. Those affected include Lot Q (west side located near College of Public Affairs and Community Service Building) and Lot M (south and west side located near Criss Library). In addition, on July 8, additional stalls will be reserved in Lot M.

Bike Omaha Commuter Challenge Now Underway
Looking for an excuse to get back on a bicycle? Need motivation to get more exercise? Want to reduce dependency on oil while saving money? Team UNO is looking for faculty and staff (including students employed by UNO) to participate in this year's Bike Omaha Commuter Challenge.
The Challenge started May 1 and ends Oct. 1. Anyone can join anytime during this period and any amount of bike-to-work commuting counts (both miles and number of trips). There are no meetings to attend, no practice required and plenty of bike parking available. For the past three years UNO has come in first place in its division in the city.Up to Top
