Elmwood Fitness Park
video by Charley Reed
June 29 marked the official opening of the Elmwood Fitness Park. The exercise area, located in Elmwood Park, is the result of hard work by recent UNO graduates Michaela Schenkelberg, Emily Casne and April Proskovec.
The ABCs of the Alumni House
Before it was the Thompson Alumni Center, one of the few places on campus that can be considered iconic to UNO's image in Omaha, the plot of land on the west end of campus was owned by two Omaha families: The Storzes and the Shirleys. continue . . .

HPER Building to be Host Site for WalkOmaha
This
event has been designated a UNO Mav-Rec Wellness event.
One of the most popular Cornhusker State Games (CSG) sports every
year is a non-competitive event called Volkswalk. The term, originally called
"Volksmarch," comes from Germany where everyone would gather and walk a
10-Kilometer course for exercise, fellowship and fun. The Germans realized the
benefits of making exercise social and fun.
With growing participation in the Omaha area, Cornhusker State Games officials decided to begin hosting a Volkswalk in Omaha to allow metro-area residents to enjoy this simple, but meaningful experience in the convenience of their own community. The Omaha version has been appropriately titled "WalkOmaha," and offers all the same Cornhusker State Games perks as the Lincoln edition.
Each participant receives a Cornhusker State Games shirt, yearbook, meal/admission pass for the opening ceremonies and all finishers receive a commemorative medallion.
This year's WalkOmaha course will start and finish at UNO's Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Building and incorporates the trails of beautiful and historic midtown Omaha. The event takes place Saturday, July 23, and participants can complete the course any time between 7 a.m. and noon. Along the route, there will be trivia questions, and walkers can find clues to answer the questions.
WalkOmaha is a great way to experience the Cornhusker State Games. Entries will be accepted on site but participants can register online, as well. Details and registration are available at http://www.cornhuskerStateGames.com.
The mission of Mav-Rec Wellness, UNO's health promotion program, is to create a culture of health and wellness among all faculty, staff and students. Health goals are encouraged through programming and initiatives that celebrate healthier lifestyle practices within the UNO community. Up to TopMav-Rec Wellness & Human Resources to Offer Smoking Cessation Program
This
event has been designated a UNO Mav-Rec Wellness event.
If you want to quit smoking, join UNO Mav-Rec Wellness for
"BEAT THE PACK." This five-week cessation program will give smokers
the tools needed to break the habit. The Mav-Rec Wellness is funding the
program so UNO employees only need to pay $10 out of pocket.
"This in-house program will provide peer support and useful
information to assist you in this life change; including what medications and
treatments your insurance provider covers," said Dave Daniels, assistant
director for fitness/wellness and instructional programs at UNO.
The cost to attend the five-week session is just $10. There are two dates and
times options:
*The early morning session meets at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 19
and 26/Aug. 2 and 9.
*The lunch session meets at noon on Thursday, July 21 and 28/Aug.
4, 11 and 18.
All classes will be held in the Health, Physical Education and
Recreation Building.
"This program would cost $250 a person if the individual had to pay for it out of pocket," Daniels said. "If an individual smokes a pack-a-day, quitting would save him or her $1,500 a year! $10 vs. $250 (or $1,500)...what a deal."
Registration information is available online at http://www.unomaha.edu/wwwocr/beatthepack or by emailing Daniels at daviddaniels@unomaha.edu.

Up to TopAnnual Salary Notifications Available in ESS
For many years the University of Nebraska has mailed hard copies of salary notifications to most employees. In an effort to save printing and distribution costs and to make information more accessible to employees, salary notifications will be distributed for the first time via https://firefly.nebraska.edu/ *. Just as you access paycheck stubs, bank information, W-2's, etc., salary notifications are currently accessible via a link in ESS, with the exception to faculty members represented by the UNO American Association of University Professors (AAUP).
To access your salary notification in Firefly, do the following:
1. Click the Employee Self Service tab.
2. In the Payment section, click the Annual Salary Notification link.
The salary notification will open in PDF format. You can save it to your computer and/or print. (Note: If you've recently upgraded to Adobe Acrobat Reader 10.1, the toolbar showing the print and save icons do not appear. To view the toolbar, press F8 on your keyboard.) This Annual Salary Notification link will remain in ESS until the following year, and only the current year's notification will be accessible.
Please contact your campus help desk if you have problems with Firefly or opening the PDF file. Please contact your supervisor if you have salary questions.
*Not every employee at the university will receive a salary notification via Employee Self Service. Employees who do not receive a notification will see the following message, "Annual salary notification not available. Please contact your supervisor."
