The NETV tower on the UNO campus is attracting some unusual visitors ... turkey vultures. More than 50 were perched on the tower Tuesday (June 28) morning. They appear to be roosting on the tower overnight.

Elmwood Park Officially Launches Outdoor Fitness Area Today

Wellness Stampede

This event has been designated a UNO Mav-Rec Wellness event.

The City of Omaha welcomes the first of its kind outdoor fitness area, which officially opens in Elmwood Park today, June 29.

Today's rescheduled dedication ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the park, near 67th and Pacific Streets, and is open to the public. Read More.

MavCard System Downtime Scheduled for This Thursday, Friday

The MavCard System will be unavailable Thursday, June 30, and Friday, July 1, due to an upgrade. MavCard users will not be able to use your MavCard to make purchases in Food Services, the Bookstore, computer labs, vending machines, off-campus merchants or any other areas where the MavCard is accepted. However, MavCards will be able to be used for door access, entrance into Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building and Criss Library book checkout.

Temporary Lot Q Closing and Lot M Stall Reservations for July 5

Lot Q (near the Bell Tower) and two rows of stalls in Lot M (24 stalls) will be closed early morning Tuesday, July 5, to allow contractor access while delivering a crane for Bell Tower maintenance. These areas must be closed due to oversized equipment.

These lots will be re-opened by Facilities Management & Planning when equipment setup is completed.

The site of the crane will be fenced off and temporary drive aisles provided adjacent to the construction site.

The crane will be on-site until approximately Wednesday, July 20.

Shuttle bus drop off and pick up will be in Lot M, near the lower level of Criss Library, for the duration of the project.

Annual Shakespeare on the Green Alumni Picnic July 8

Join fellow alumni at the annual Shakespeare on the Green Alumni Picnic Friday, July 8. The annual event features dinner at the Thompson Center followed by a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on the green.

Summer Book Buyback Runs through Friday at UNO Bookstore

The second textbook buyback of the summer continues through Friday, July 1. Additional dates for buyback are July 5-8.

The UNO Bookstore's hours of operation for summer are:

* Open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays; and
* Open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The bookstore will also be closed July 4. The final summer textbook buyback will be Aug. 8-12. Regular hours resume Aug. 23.

Call for Video Topics: Student Organizations, Fall 2011 Courses, and Faculty Research

University Relations is looking for interested faculty and staff who would like to be the subject of a short video profiling the student organizations they advise, the courses they will be teaching in fall, or the research they are currently working on.

As part of UNO's online presence, University Relations produces dozens of videos which are then hosted on YouTube and the website. Last semester videos were created that featured topics like MavRadio, UNO's student-run radio station, a course called "Language and Comics," featuring Dr. Frank Bramlett from the Department of English, research from Dr. Raj Dasgupta on the detection of landmines using robotics, and many more.

Human Resources Reminder on June Biweekly Paydays

Human Resources staff would like to remind the campus community that this month has three biweekly paydays: June 2, 16 and 30. No standard deductions will be taken from the June 30 biweekly payroll.

Regular biweekly-paid employees will not have NUCREDITS included or standard deductions (insurance, parking, etc.) withheld. Federal and state taxes, Social Security and Medicare taxes, retirement and credit union deductions will be taken.

HR Reminds Staff of .80 FTE Opportunity

The deadline for staff to apply for the full-time equivalency reduction program is Thursday, June 30. Eligible employees may choose to reduce their annual FTE and salary to less then full-time (1.0 FTE) but no lower than .80 FTE and continue to receive University of Nebraska health and/or dental benefits and NU Credits as if a 1.0 FTE position. 

Participation in the program is subject to approval of the employee's supervisor. The program offers staff members the opportunity to adjust their work schedule to better balance their work and family needs.

Campus Rec Offers Women's Self-Defense Summer Workshop

Wellness Stampede

This event has been designated a UNO Mav-Rec Wellness event.

Tim Gorham, an instructor from Six Point Self-Defense, will conduct a new two-day workshop for women at the Health, Physical Education & Recreation (HPER) Building in July. Participants will learn the basics of self-defense including a basic fight stance, different strikes and where to use them, ground assault defense, defending a car assault and choke defense. Women in the workshop will also learn to be more aware of their surroundings.

This summer workshop will be offered in Tuesday and Thursday, July 26 and 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. both evenings.

Registration is $25 for students, $35 for Mav Rec Members, $50 for Faculty/Staff (non-members,) and $75 for the public. Registration forms can be filled out at the HPER Control Desk.

July 15 Workshop to Examine Spirituality and Aging

The workshop "Spirituality and Aging: An Obligation to Impart" will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 15, at UNO.

The daylong workshop, held at the College of Public Affairs and Community Service Collaborating Commons, will provide patrons the tools and insight needed to see the wisdom and value elders bring to a faith community.

Sponsored by the Department of Gerontology, the workshop will cost $15 for attendees age 55 and older; $25 for attendees under age 55; and $50 for attendees who wish to receive Continuing Education Unit credits. Read More.

Summer Hours Under Way at Campus Food Service

Campus summer food service hours are now set. Currently, the Milo Bail Student Center's American Grill, Greenfields, D'café, Grab & Go and Tomasittos are open from 7 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Library Cafe and MavRec Cafe are now keeping the same 7 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday schedule.
