UNO's Founding Father

This week's Father's Day brings to mind UNO's own founding father: Daniel Jenkins. Jenkins was a Presbyterian minister in Omaha when, October, 8, 1908, Jenkins and others in the Omaha area established Omaha University as a private, cost-effective option for those who could not afford the tuition of Creighton or the University of Nebraska. In the university's infancy, Jenkins served as its first president. From its first class of under a dozen students in 1909, at 24th and Pratt, to its 15,000-plus enrollees at the Dodge, Pacific and Center Street Campuses, Jenkins' vision is still coming true more than a century later.
