Eight high school government teachers and 25 high school students from across Nebraska took part in the Nebraska Civic Leadership Conference at UNO last week. Participants during the six-day conference focused on local and state government issues in classes taught by UNO faculty. They also met a variety of city officials, including Mayor Jim Suttle.
Classical 90.7 KVNO and Others Join Forces for 'Kids in Concert'
Kids in Concert officially kicks off today! Public Service Announcements (PSAs) will air starting today, July 1, and continues through Tuesday, Aug. 31, to encourage the community to donate used musical instruments to Omaha Public Schools (OPS) students. OPS will rehabilitate and distribute the instruments to deserving students who want to pursue instrumental music but whose families are unable to purchase or rent an instrument.
Instruments can be taken to the OPS Teacher Administration Center (TAC), 3215 Cuming St., Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Bookworm at Countryside Village, 8702 Pacific St., is also collecting instruments. Additional drop-off sites in other parts of the city are needed. Information is available at 557.2443 and the contact is June Nelson.

'Romeo and Juliet' Takes to the Stage Tonight for Shakespeare on the Green
Nebraska Shakespeare will celebrate young love this summer with its productions of "Romeo and Juliet" and a musical adaptation of "Two Gentlemen of Verona." The first performance of "Rome and Juliet" is set for tonight, July 1.
The outdoor performances are part of this year's Shakespeare on the Green. For the first time in its 24-year history, Nebraska Shakespeare will produce a musical - "Two Gentlemen of Verona" - as part of the annual event.

Parking Closing Notice for Shakespeare on the Green
Several parking stalls will be unavailable on performance dates near this summer's Shakespeare on the Green site at Elmwood Park, adjacent to UNO at the Dodge Location. Signs will be posted.
The Shakespeare on the Green performance dates are Thursday through Sunday, July 1-4 and July 8-11.
Designated stalls will be closed all day so stalls can be reserved for performance nights. Those affected include Lot Q (west side) and Lot M (south end). In addition, on July 8, additional stalls will be reserved in Lot M.

Faculty/Staff Picnic Set for Aug. 17
Food, fun and free prizes will take center stage on campus Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the 2010 UNO Faculty/Staff Picnic. The event - sponsored by Chancellor John Christensen, the Staff Advisory Council and Faculty Senate - will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom.
R.S.V.P. registration forms must be submitted to Kim Kronschnabel in 109 Eppley Administration Building by Wednesday, July 28, to be eligible for the prize drawings. Participants Sought for UNMC Smoking Cessation Study
event has been designated a UNO Mav-Rec Wellness event.
The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing is seeking smokers 19 years of age and older to participate in a research study about thoughts and feelings related to classes about genetic contributions to smoking (IRB #226-09-FB).
A stipend is available for participation. Eligible individuals must:
- Smoke more than ten cigarettes/day; and
- Have an interest in stopping smoking within the next month.
This study involves participation in:
- Classes on either genetic or nutritional education;
- Group smoking cessation program with FDA-approved nicotine patch; and
- Data collection five times during the study.
