Students, faculty and staff donated 5,100 pink erasers during the spring semester for the Salvation Army's Back-to-School Backpack Program.

UNO's Staff Advisory Council (SAC) organized the campus campaign. SAC members and the UNO campus also engaged in a friendly competition with Creighton University, who collected rulers for the backpack program.

The effort of both universities was celebrated June 10 (above photo) at the Salvation Army's new Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, 2825 Y St. Salvation Army representatives were on hand to accept the donations from UNO and Creighton. A handful of elementary school students also received new backpacks for the 2010-2011 school year.

"Community engagement is at the very core of UNO's mission,"' said Kent Lavene, SAC president. "We were delighted to participate in the school supply drive, and were happy to raise the needed items alongside Creighton University.
