Free posters, game tickets and an opportunity to meet the UNO coaches brought out the crowds Aug. 7 at the First National Bank of Omaha downtown headquarters. Several hundred First National Bank employees took advantage of the event to pick up free sports posters and sign-up for tickets. The event was one of several outreach programs scheduled by UNO to promote upcoming sporting events.

Football Practices Begin

The UNO Mavericks met the media Wednesday afternoon, August 5 at Caniglia Field. Coach Pat Behrns welcomed approximately 100 players to the field for interviews with the Omaha sports media. The player's first practice session is Thursday afternoon. The Mavericks open the 2009 season on Thursday, August 27 at 7 pm vs. East Central University of Oklahoma.

World AIDS Day Service in South Africa

UNO student Aundrea (Andie) Hansen will spend this semester in South Africa based out of Stellenbosch University near Cape Town. A major focus of her studies will be centered on service learning and community outreach. She plans on taking part in UNO's World AIDS Day project, set for Dec. 1. She explains how she became interested in traveling abroad and her interest in service learning.

Mavericks Launch Season With "Mav Fest"

The UNO Mavericks will remain true to their mantra as "Omaha's Team" by welcoming the general public and UNO students to "Mav Fest 2009" on Sunday, Aug. 23, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Caniglia Field. This family-oriented event will allow guests a chance to meet UNO student-athletes and coaches prior to the start of the 2009-2010 athletic season. Read more.

Wellness Stampede

Bowling League Members Sought

This event has been designated a UNO Wellness Stampede event.

Anyone attending the UNO Faculty/Staff Bowling League "open house" on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at West Lanes, 72nd and Dodge streets, can bowl a free game courtesy of the alley. The league welcomes new members and teams of all skill levels. The open house will run from 4 to 6 p.m.

The 2009-10 league officially starts Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 4:30 p.m. at West Lanes. Teams consist of four bowlers with at least two UNO current or retired administrative/faculty/staff members including spouses, immediate family or significant others. Graduate teaching assistants are also eligible.

New teams or individuals who would like to be placed on a new or existing team are welcome. Bowlers must, however, be at least 18 years old.

League bowlers unable to arrive at 4:30 p.m. each week have until the end of their team's fifth frame to join the first game of the evening.

Hi-tech Classroom Reimaging Set for Aug. 14-17

In order to update software, Information Technology Services (ITS) has announced a routine reimaging of computers in more than 120 hi-tech classrooms across campus. Beginning this Friday afternoon, Aug. 14, all computers in ITS hi-tech classrooms will be reimaged (or returned to their original configuration).

During reimaging, any programs or files that may have been added to the computer during the semester will be deleted. To safeguard files, faculty and staff utilizing hi-tech classrooms should create a backup of all data via myFolder or a flash drive by Aug. 14. Reimaging of computers in the hi-tech classrooms will be complete and ready for utilization again on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Guaranteed Parking Stalls Available

The University Drive South Parking Structure has guaranteed parking stalls available for the fall semester.

The price is the cost of the permit plus an additional $70 fee. This permit will allow commuters to park in Lots J and L, as well as in appropriate surface lots at the Dodge, Pacific and Center locations.

A limited number of permits and cards will be issued on a first come, first served basis.

Fidelity Representative Schedule Announced through October

Fidelity representative Jason Cronick will be in Omaha for individual counseling sessions from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. according to the following schedule:

- Tuesday, Aug. 25

- Monday, Sept 7

- Thursday, Sept. 17

- Thursday, Oct. 1

- Monday, Oct. 19

All sessions will take place in 205 Eppley Administration Building (EAB) Conference Room. Employees can call Fidelity at 800.642.7131 to schedule an appointment with Cronick.

Wellness Stampede

Walk-to-Wellness Program Takes a Break

This event has been designated a UNO Wellness Stampede event.

Due to busy back-to-school preparations and the Health, Physical Education and Recreation expansion and renovation, the Walk-to-Wellness Program will take a vacation through Monday, Sept. 7.

In the meantime, UNO employees are encouraged to try to obtain 30 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week. Another option is the "Miracle Mile Walk," click on this link for the complete schedule.

"Use the rest of the summer to be active and eat healthy," said Dave Daniels, assistant director for Fitness/Wellness and Instructional Programs. "Keep using those walking shoes, and we'll see you after Labor Day!"

SAC Seeks Employee of the Month Nominations

The Staff Advisory Council (SAC) continues to seek nominations for the Employee of the Month Award for office/service and managerial/professional personnel. Nominations can be submitted by staff, faculty and managers or administrators, and must meet the new criteria listed below.

"If you have previously submitted a nomination prior to January 2009, please resubmit your nomination with the new criteria listed below," said Monica Bayles, SAC treasurer.

The new criteria for the award:

- Performed job above and beyond expectations;

- Interpersonal skill/communication;

- Knowledge of job; and

- Adaptability.

Nomination guidelines:

- Nominees must be employed at UNO for one year or longer;

- An Employee of the Month qualifies to be selected as Employee of the Year; and

- Nominations will be kept on file for 90 days and will be considered with all nominations for Employee of the Month.

Recipients will receive a $100 award. To nominate an employee, print and complete the nomination form at http://www.unomaha.edu/enotes/2009/img/sac_eomform.pdf and send it through campus mail to P.O. Box 130.
