MetrO! Rideshare Carpool Challenge Kicks Off

Individuals tired of contributing to global warming or spending money on gas can participate in a new program focused on alternative forms of transportation. The Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA), in collaboration with corporate and community partners like UNO, is hosting the MetrO! Rideshare Carpool Challenge today, July 20, through Sunday, Aug. 28.

"The MetrO! Rideshare Carpool Challenge 2009 will be a great way to get commuters to think about alternative forms of transportation," said Tara Ryan, event organizer from MAPA. "It will also allow companies, schools and organizations to compete against each other and offer a great benefit to commuters in the metro area."

All faculty, staff and students can participate. To take part in this six-week challenge UNO-participants will carpool to work and record the days and mileage online. For instructions on how to sign up and log mileage, click on this link.

Tips to registering:
- Remember to designate UNO as an Employer or School;
- Click the preferences box to be added to the UNO-only carpool; and
- Register under "Carpool Ride," on the Commute Tracker screen.

"Most importantly, when competing in the rideshare challenge at the ‘Commute Tracker' screen, participants must always remember to register daily mileage as ‘Carpool Ride' or it won't count toward the challenge," Ryan said.

Gas cards for different denominations will be rewarded throughout the competition.  The prize breakdown and challenge information is also available online at

To have rideshare challenge instructions mailed, e-mailed or faxed, contact Becky Bohan Brown at 554.2243 or
