Participants enrolled in the Omaha Jazz Workshop summer camp were busy last week under the watchful eye of Jim Widner. The week-long camp is designed for middle school, high school and college students, and adults. Students learned about jazz theory, improvisation and performance. The students served as the opening act of a June 19 concert featuring the Jim Widner Big Band in the Strauss Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.

Wellness Stampede

"Friday's The Miracle Mile" Starts June 26

This event has been designated a UNO Wellness Stampede event.

Student Health Services nurse Julie Kalasek and the "If Only We Were Taller" You Look MAVelous! team invite the campus community to participate in "Friday's The Miracle Mile" this summer. The Friday inside walking events will take place in the Milo Bail Student Center Un mon hon Room.

No experience is necessary and participants will have the opportunity to walk inside to a 25-minute DVD.

"The Miracle Mile walk is equivalent of a one-mile outdoor walk. It is designed for people of all ages and fitness levels," Kalasek said. "Wear comfortable shoes or you can walk barefoot, too."

Walking times are 3:30 to 4 p.m. on the following dates:
- June 26
- July 10, 17, 24 and 31
- Aug. 7

Free Financial Seminar Offered by UNO, Family Housing Advisory Services on July 18

"Surviving in Today's Economy," a free financial seminar, will be held at the College of Public Affairs and Community Service Building Saturday, July 18. The seminar will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is jointly hosted by UNO and Family Housing Advisory Services, Inc. (FHAS) in Omaha.

David Brown, president of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, is the seminar's keynote speaker. Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle and FHAS Executive Director Teresa Hunter will offer opening remarks. Read more.

MBSC Food Court Menu During Construction

Construction has begun on the Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC) Food Court. This summer, all grab-n-go items, including salads and sandwiches, are available. In the D'café soup, hot dogs and other roller grill items are available along with continental breakfast items.

Food Services staff apologizes for any inconvenience the construction may cause and looks forward to serving its faculty, staff and student patrons in the newly improved food court this fall. Watch eNotes this summer for updates on the MBSC construction.

Wellness Stampede

"You Look MAVelous!" Team Weigh-ins June 24

This event has been designated a UNO Wellness Stampede event.

You Look MAVelous! — UNO's fitness and summer weight loss challenge - next team weigh-in is set for Wednesday, June 24, on the Henningson Memorial Plaza.

The Wellness Stampede, Human Resources and Student Health Services teamed up to host the first-ever challenge, which encourages faculty and staff to work together to come up with a healthier workforce. A special platform and scale has been constructed for the weigh-ins. More than 21 teams will be in attendance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The rain location will be the Milo Bail Student Center Fireplace Lounge.

Budget Forum Set for This Week

UNO Chancellor John Christensen will host a campus forum focused on the university budget this Thursday, June 25, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service Building (CB). All members of the campus community - faculty, staff and students - are welcome to attend.

Like the three earlier forums that took place during the spring semester, this event will be an informational session on the 2009-2010 budget. Senior Vice Chancellor Terry Hynes and Vice Chancellor Bill Conley, who have led the campus Budget Advisory Task Force, will also help lead the presentation and discussion.

The event will take place in the Collaborating Commons of CB, and seating will be available for 100. Arriving early is encouraged. For more information, call 554.3502.

SAC Seeks Employee of the Month Nominations

The Staff Advisory Council (SAC) continues to seek nominations for the Employee of the Month Award for office/service and managerial/professional personnel. Nominations can be submitted by staff, faculty and managers or administrators, and must meet the new criteria listed below.

"If you have previously submitted a nomination prior to January 2009, please resubmit your nomination with the new criteria listed below," said Monica Bayles, SAC treasurer.

The new criteria for the award:
- Performed job above and beyond expectations;
- Interpersonal skill/communication;
- Knowledge of job; and
- Adaptability.

Nomination guidelines:
- Nominees must be employed at UNO for one year or longer;
- An Employee of the Month qualifies to be selected as Employee of the Year; and
- Nominations will be kept on file for 90 days and will be considered with all nominations for Employee of the Month.

Recipients will receive a $100 award. To nominate an employee, print and complete the nomination form at http://www.unomaha.edu/enotes/2009/img/sac_eomform.pdf and send it through campus mail to P.O. Box 130.

Summer Permit Parking Available in Church Lot

UNO employees with faculty/staff parking permits can park in the St. Margaret Mary's Church parking lot at 6116 Dodge St. this summer. Parking will be available there in UNO-designated lots through Friday, Aug. 21.

During the fall and spring semesters, parking at this location remains limited to student permit holders. Night-only permits will not be honored until after 12:30 p.m.
