Google Speaker Visits UNO

Vint Cerf, vice president and chief internet evangelist of Google, spoke June 15 to a capacity crowd at UNO's Scott Conference Center. Cerf, also known as father of the Internet, gave an hour-long presentation on "The Future of the Internet."

Blais Named Head Hockey Coach

UNO athletic director Trev Alberts Friday afternoon introduced Dean Blais as the Maverick's new hockey coach. Blais comes to Omaha from the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League where he served as head coach and general manager. As a college coach, Blais won national championships as the head coach of the University of North Dakota in 1997 and 2000.

Budget Forum Set for June 25

UNO Chancellor John Christensen will host a campus forum focused on the university budget Thursday, June 25, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service Building (CB). All members of the campus community - faculty, staff and students - are welcome to attend.

Like the three earlier forums that took place during the spring semester, this event will be an informational session on the 2009-2010 budget.  Senior Vice Chancellor Terry Hynes and Vice Chancellor Bill Conley, who have led the campus Budget Advisory Task Force, will also help lead the presentation and discussion.

The event will take place in the Collaborating Commons of CB, and seating will be available for 100.  Arriving early is encouraged. For more information, call 554.3502.

Deadline Friday for Annual Alumni Shakespeare on the Green Picnic Night

UNO faculty, staff, students and alumni are invited to the UNO Alumni Association's annual Shakespeare on the Green Picnic set for Wednesday, June 24, at the William H. and Dorothy Thompson Alumni Center. The deadline for registration is this Friday, June 19.

The event will begin with a picnic from 6 to 7:15 p.m. followed by a performance of "Macbeth" at 8 p.m. The cost is $12 per person, which includes a picnic buffet, reserved seating "down front" at the play, reserved parking near the green and a "Macbeth" preview by Cindy Melby Phaneuf, professor of theater at UNO, who is also co-founder and artistic director of the Nebraska Shakespeare Festival (NSF).

Greek Recruitment Events Planned Through September at UNO

Current and incoming students at UNO can learn more about some of the sororities and fraternities on campus at three events, the first happening in July.

"If you don't have the printer for the toner cartridges anymore, then send them to the mailroom," she said. "With the budget situation, continuing to recycle ink and toner cartridges can save the university and departments money."

UNO to Participate in June 20 Pride Parade

The Gender and Sexual Orientation (GSO) agency will represent UNO in the Pride Parade planned for Saturday, June 20, in downtown Omaha.

Students, faculty and staff will display a UNO banner in the parade, which begins at 10th and Pacific streets. Those interested in walking with the UNO group can call Erin Cron at 554.2711.

The GSO promotes, advocates and educates according to the belief that each person and community possesses inherent value and deserves to enjoy the basic tenets of safety, respect, dignity and equality, regardless of one's sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.

In accordance with these fundamental beliefs, the GSO seeks to assure the mutual acceptance and understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed, questioning and allied, as well as heterosexual, individuals.  It offers its support, services and educational resources on behalf of the institution's student, faculty and staff populations.

Foreign Liability Coverage Extended for 2009-10

UNO is in the process of extending foreign liability insurance for the 2009-10 fiscal year. The university's Foreign Liability Coverage Policy requires clarification regarding upcoming travel.

Faculty and staff anticipating foreign travel in the coming year are asked to provide Risk Management with the best estimates. Click on this link for employee and student travel details.

Participants Sought for HPER Study

Researchers in the UNO School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation are currently looking for healthy, non-obese females aged 19-30 who currently take the oral contraceptive Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo to participate in a study investigating how oral contraceptive use impacts blood vessel function.

Individuals must be taking one of the forms of the oral contraceptive listed above for at least four months. In addition, subjects should not have high blood pressure, must not be diabetic, have no history of heart disease and must not be taking any medications with the exception of oral contraceptives.  The study would require one one-hour screening session and four two-hour laboratory tests.

Subjects will be compensated for their time spent participating in this study.

Statewide Service Award Presented to Business Administration Staff Member

A UNO staff member has received a Nebraska Career Education (NCE) Award. Mary Lynn Reiser serves as associate director of UNO's Center for Economic Education.

Reiser received the 2009 Distinguished Partner Award at the NCE Conference June 10-11 in Kearney. The conference annually recognizes outstanding Nebraska career education programs, partners and staff. Read more.
