Blais Named Head Hockey Coach

UNO athletic director Trev Alberts Friday afternoon introduced Dean Blais as the Maverick's new hockey coach. Blais comes to Omaha from the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League where he served as head coach and general manager. As a college coach, Blais won national championships as the head coach of the University of North Dakota in 1997 and 2000.

Blais Named New Hockey Coach at UNO

UNO Director of Athletics Trev Alberts announced June 12 that Dean Blais has been named the school's new head hockey coach. Blais succeeds Mike Kemp who became an associate athletic director last month. Blais is just the second hockey coach in school history. Read more.

OLLAS Sponsors Workshop for Latino, Migrant Leaders

The UNO Office of Latino/Latin American Studies sponsored a three-day workshop for migrant and Latino leaders entitled "Leadership, Empowerment and Civic Engagement: Reclaiming our Heritage and Building Networks Across the Americas." It concluded June 7 with a luncheon and closing ceremony that was attended by then Omaha mayor-elect Jim Suttle as well as state senators Brenda Council, Heath Mello and Jeremy Nordquist.

The event aimed to strengthen the capacity of immigrant and Latino leaders and organizations to address the challenges that confront their communities and also further encourage them to participate in the civil society and political processes in the United States and in immigrant countries of origin. Academics and immigrant leaders from Mexico, El Salvador, Chicago and Omaha took part. Read more.

Music Department Hosts Jazz Workshop, Jim Widner Big Band Concerts

The Omaha Jazz Workshop summer camp finds its home at UNO this week, when it combines forces with the Jim Widner Big Band to present the week-long camp for middle school, high school and college students, and adults.

The camp will run today, June 14, through Friday, June 19, and is designed for instrumental students in grades 7 and older to learn more about jazz theory, improvisation and performance. Read more.

COE Welcomes Lewis and Clark Middle School to Campus

The College of Education, in collaboration with UNO faculty, staff and students from across the campus, will host a portion of the summer school program for Lewis and Clark Middle School. The middle school students will be on campus this week, June 16-19.

Students will participate in a variety of activities designed to increase their awareness of post-secondary education, motivate them to make the educational choices now that will prepare them for the future, and familiarize them with the UNO community. More than 50 UNO faculty, staff and students will be interacting with the approximately 75 Lewis and Clark students and teachers during the four-day period. The event culminates with commencement on Friday, June 19.

"This is the fourth year of this collaborative effort," said Connie Schaffer, with the College of Education Office of Student Services. "It is a privilege to have these young scholars and their teachers on our campus. This is a chance for us to connect with the middle school staff, students and our colleagues across campus. More importantly, it allows young people to connect the choices they make today to future educational opportunities."

ITS Prepares Computer/Printer Bulk Purchase

To assure the lowest possible pricing, Information Technology Services (ITS) will once again be coordinating a bulk purchase of Dell computers and HP Laserjet printers for the UNO campus. The models being purchased have been configured for the greatest performance with the least expense.

Desktop computer:
- Dell Optiplex 760 (approximately $949)

Laptop computers:
- Dell E-Lattitude 6400 (approximately $1,025)
- Dell Lattitude 2100 (approximately $463)

Printers:
- HP 4015tn Laserjet (duplexing unit estimated $1,250)
- HP4014n Laserjet (estimated $700)
- HP Color Laserjet 3525N (estimated $700)

ITS staff members ask that all requests be submitted by e-mail at unohelpdesk@unomaha.edu or by calling 554.HELP (554.4357) by the close of business on Thursday, June 25. Requests should include the following information:
- Name;
- Department name;
- Cost center number;
- For purchase using 2008-09 funds or 2009-10 funds; and
- Number of units.

ITS will place the orders the last week of June with expected delivery by Wednesday, July 15. ITS staff will be happy to assist in delivery to any department's doorstep. Send requests for components which are not listed here, i.e. sound bars for workstations. ITS will compile requests for campus to obtain maximum discount. If a department purchases workstations and does not need monitors, ITS will negotiate with others on campus whom might need extra monitors.

This event has been designated a UNO Wellness Stampede event.

Got 20 minutes to look MAVelous? Hy-Vee Dietician Karisa Jensen will speak at Criss Library on Thursdays this summer at 11 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.

"Those who have heard Karisa say they learned a lot, even though many consider themselves expert shoppers and label readers," said Mollie Anderson, director of Human Resources. "Come hear Karisa -- the walk over to Criss counts as exercise, and the weather will be beautiful!"

Nebraska Shakespeare Produces "Macbeth" for 23rd Season of Shakespeare on the Green

Nebraska Shakespeare is producing Shakespeare's "Macbeth" for this summer's Shakespeare on the Green 2009. "Macbeth" officially kicks off this Thursday, June 18, in Elmwood Park. The production runs for two weeks: June 18-21, and 24-28.

Organizers anticipate a record attendance for this very popular production. The event is free to the many thousands of supporters who come to a family-friendly and magical experience. Many arrive early with their picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs to get a good spot "on the green." Read more.

SAC Seeks Employee of the Month Nominations

The Staff Advisory Council (SAC) continues to seek nominations for the Employee of the Month Award for office/service and managerial/professional personnel. Nominations can be submitted by staff, faculty and managers or administrators, and must meet the new criteria listed below.

"If you have previously submitted a nomination prior to January 2009, please resubmit your nomination with the new criteria listed below," said Monica Bayles, SAC treasurer.

The new criteria for the award:
- Performed job above and beyond expectations;
- Interpersonal skill/communication;
- Knowledge of job; and
- Adaptability.

Nomination guidelines:
- Nominees must be employed at UNO for one year or longer;
- An Employee of the Month qualifies to be selected as Employee of the Year; and
- Nominations will be kept on file for 90 days and will be considered with all nominations for Employee of the Month.

Recipients will receive a $100 award. To nominate an employee, print and complete the nomination form at http://www.unomaha.edu/enotes/2009/img/sac_eomform.pdf and send it through campus mail to P.O. Box 130.

Summer Motorcycle Parking Notice

Additional seasonal motorcycle parking is available for faculty, staff and students through Friday, Aug. 21. Motorcycles may be parked at the following locations at the Dodge, Pacific and Center locations:

- West of the south entry of Lot Q (new location by the College of Public Affairs and Community Service Building);

- University Drive East Parking Structure (stop by Campus Security, 100 Eppley Administration Building, for details);

- Northwest corner of Lot A (north of Kayser Hall);

- Northwest corner of Lot M (south of Criss Library);

- Southwest corner of Lot 2 (north of The University of Nebraska Peter Kiewit Institute); and

- West of the dome in Lot 20 (Center location).
