Roo, an Australian red kangaroo, hopped into UNO's HPER Building — actually, he was carried into the building in a large kennel — June 1 as part of the Mavs Kids Camp. Campers are studying Australia and were entertained by a snake, lizards and a bird that are all native to Australia.

Messages of Persistence, Earnestness, Optimism

Phani Tej Adidam, College of Business Administration, delivered the keynote address during the April 18 commencement ceremonies at the Helsinki School of Economics, the largest business school in Finland. Adidam spoke to graduates from the school's International Business program.



Volunteers Sought for Estrogen Metabolism Study

Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center need volunteers between the ages of 19 and 75 to participate in a study that examines estrogen metabolism in healthy men and women. The goal of this research is to understand how people metabolize estrogens.

Participants must be in good general health and not have been diagnosed with cancer, neurodegenerative disease or cardiovascular disease. A simple, one-time collection of urine is needed.

UNO Hosting Student Song Festival through Wednesday

UNO will host the 2009 Festival of Song and Academy today through Wednesday, June 8-10. The festival is designed to instruct student singers in the art and technique of classical art song literature.

Each student will receive individual instruction in song preparation, vocal technique and diction by professional musicians invited to UNO for the event. Students will be coached on the meaning of text, diction and vocal production. Read more.

SAC Seeks Employee of the Month Nominations

The Staff Advisory Council (SAC) continues to seek nominations for the Employee of the Month Award for office/service and managerial/professional personnel. Nominations can be submitted by staff, faculty and managers or administrators, and must meet the new criteria listed below.

"If you have previously submitted a nomination prior to January 2009, please resubmit your nomination with the new criteria listed below," said Monica Bayles, SAC treasurer.

The new criteria for the award:
- Performed job above and beyond expectations;
- Interpersonal skill/communication;
- Knowledge of job; and
- Adaptability.

Nomination guidelines:
- Nominees must be employed at UNO for one year or longer;
- An Employee of the Month qualifies to be selected as Employee of the Year; and
- Nominations will be kept on file for 90 days and will be considered with all nominations for Employee of the Month.

Recipients will receive a $100 award. To nominate an employee, print and complete the nomination form at and send it through campus mail to P.O. Box 130.

Writing Center and Math-Science Learning Center Offer Summer Consultation Services

For the first time, the UNO Writing Center now offers summer consultation services. Writing Center consultants are available at its library satellite on the main level of Criss Library to serve UNO's summer students.

Students needing help with writing assignments can stop by the library to talk with the center's experienced writing consultants. This is a walk-in service; no appointment is necessary.

Writing Center Summer Hours at the library:
- Today through Thursday, Aug. 13 (Monday through Thursday)
10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Math-Science Learning Center (MSLC) offers summer consultation services in 107 Durham Science Center. Students taking summer courses in math or science can stop by to receive assistance from MSLC consultants. This is a walk-in service; no appointment is necessary.

Repair Work Continues on Parking Structure

Facilities Management and Planning staff continues to make repairs to the University Drive East Parking Structure this week.

Student parking is available on the top level, as repairs will begin on the lower level. Repairs will continue to the middle level; however, faculty/staff parking will be available in designated areas of that level. Watch eNotes for updates.

Summer Motorcycle Parking Notice

Additional seasonal motorcycle parking is available for faculty, staff and students through Friday, Aug. 21. Motorcycles may be parked at the following locations at the Dodge, Pacific and Center locations:

- West of the south entry of Lot Q (new location by the College of Public Affairs and Community Service Building);

- University Drive East Parking Structure (stop by Campus Security, 100 Eppley Administration Building, for details);

- Northwest corner of Lot A (north of Kayser Hall);

- Northwest corner of Lot M (south of Criss Library);

- Southwest corner of Lot 2 (north of The University of Nebraska Peter Kiewit Institute); and

- West of the dome in Lot 20 (Center location).

Summer Shuttle Schedule Under Way

Summer shuttle service is under way Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., excluding holidays. The shuttle stops at the Dodge location and Pacific location only. There is no shuttle service to Crossroads Mall during the summer months.
