UNO Commencement Aug. 15 at the Civic

More than 520 students will graduate Friday, Aug. 15, during the UNO summer commencement ceremony. The event begins at 2 p.m. at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, 1804 Capitol Ave.

Amy Panning, a Hooper, Neb., native, will present the student commencement address.  She graduates magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in social work.  This fall, she plans to pursue a master's degree in social work at UNO.  Panning has participated in or organized more than 30 community service events at UNO and beyond.

Sally Ganem, the First Lady of Nebraska, will receive the Alumnus Achievement Award.  She earned both her bachelor's degree in elementary education and master's degree in education administration from UNO.  The wife of Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman, Ganem is active in the Fremont, Neb., community and across the state.  A member of the Read Aloud Nebraska Board of Directors, she regularly reads to school groups.

ITS Announces myBlackboard Sessions for August

Information Technology Services (ITS) will offer a full compliment of Blackboard training courses to prepare faculty and staff for the fall semester. 

"I encourage our faculty to implement one feature in Blackboard at a time. Start slowly and use another new feature each semester," said Pat Dargantes, ITS trainer.

All of the myBlackboard training will be held in 104 Durham Science Center (DSC).  Participants are encouraged to read the handouts for the courses found under the "Instructor Help" tab in myBlackboard before coming to class.

To sign up for these courses:

- Go to http://www.unomaha.edu/api/calendar.php;

- Select "August" from the drop down menu on the right and click "Go";

- Enter a SAP personnel number (This is the five-digit number on all university

picture IDs.  It is also located on all employee check stubs.)

- Click "Sign Up";

- Click "OK" to confirm the personnel number; and

- An email is sent confirming this registration.  Add the class to Lotus Notes

calendar.

A minimum of five people signed up by 2 p.m. the day prior to the class is required.  An email notification will be sent the day before, if the class is cancelled.

Participants Sought for Gait Study at HPER Biomechanics Lab

Healthy subjects -- older adults above 65 years of age -- are needed to participate in a study taking place in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Biomechanics Laboratory. The study is investigating the effects of attention and perception on walking behavior.

Ideal participants should be over 65, right-handed, native English speaking and free from any lower limb orthopedic pathologies such as joint replacement or knee ligament injuries. Subjects will take part in two, 90-minute sessions that involve a variety of tasks including walking, attention and verbal tasks, like reading words or naming pictures projected on a screen. For participation, subjects will receive a full analysis of their gait profile.

Data will be collected using the state-of-the-art laboratory-based motion capture system identical to equipment used for motion picture special effects and video games. Sessions will take place at scheduled times during the next few weeks.

August FEAP Schedule

The Faculty/Staff Employee Assistance Program (FEAP) provides short-term counseling, assessment and referral services for faculty, staff, their spouses or significant others, and family members. FEAP offices are located in 206 Eppley Administration Building.

USAF Drill Team to Give Performance at UNO Aug. 11

UNO will host an outdoor morning performance of the United States Air Force (USAF) Honor Guard Drill Team on Monday, Aug.11.  The event is part of Omaha's Air Force Week celebration.

The Drill Team is the traveling component of the USAF Honor Guard, which has performed in all 50 states and many countries abroad.  Read more.

2008 Faculty/Staff Picnic Set for Aug. 18

Food, fun and free prizes will take center stage on campus Monday, Aug. 18, at the UNO Faculty/Staff Picnic. The event - sponsored by Chancellor John Christensen, the Staff Advisory Council and Faculty Senate - will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Nebraska Room.  This year's theme is "Building for the Future."

Chancellor Christensen will deliver welcoming remarks at the event.

R.S.V.P. registration forms must be submitted to Barb Mraz in 414 Kayser Hall by Monday, Aug. 11, to be eligible for the prize drawings. Show UNO spirit and wear red and black to the event. University IDs will be checked at the door. To access a form, click on the following link:

Part-time Faculty Workshops Set for Aug. 20-21

Workshops for all part-time UNO faculty will take place Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 20-21, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Arts and Sciences Hall.

Sessions will cover:

- An overview of UNO;

- A teaching tips panel;

- An introduction to UNO resources, services and campus safety; and

- Advanced information technology services for experienced part-time faculty.

Samland Named Midlands College Coach of Year
UNO swimming coach Todd Samland, who has led the Maverick program since its inception in 1996, was recently named the Midlands college coach of the year for women's sports by the Omaha World-Herald. Read more.
