Weight Watchers on Campus Open House Today

Weight Watchers on Campus is back for the fall semester. Faculty, staff and students can attend the open house today, Aug. 1.  The theme of the event is "Put Yourself 1st on August 1st!" It takes place from 12:30 to 1 p.m. in 213 Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER).

Dave Daniels, assistant director for fitness/wellness and instructional programs, said if anyone answers yes to these questions, to think about attending the Aug. 1 half-hour session:

- How many times have you put others' well-being above your own?

- Have you put on a few pounds over the years?

- Need some encouragement to take it off?

"Weight Watchers is not a diet; it is a healthy lifestyle change," Daniels said. "Weight Watchers is a proven program which uses the points plan or the core plan, portion-control, movement and support to change lives."

At the session, dates will be determined for the regular meetings for the next 15-week program. Plans are to start the program the week of September 7.

"However, we need to have 15 paid participants by Thursday, Aug. 28, in order to get a Weight Watchers' leader, the program materials and the weekly meetings at UNO," Daniels said.

The cost for the 15-week program is $180, and is payable in three monthly installments (by check only). If paying by credit card or cash, individuals must pay the $180 at the start of the program.

For details, contact Daniels at 554.2008 or Jessica Dozark at 554.3917.

Participants Sought for Gait Study at HPER Biomechanics Lab

Healthy subjects - older adults above 65 years of age - are needed to participate in a study taking place in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Biomechanics Laboratory. The study is investigating the effects of attention and perception on walking behavior.

Ideal participants should be over 65 years of age, right-handed, native English speaking and free from any lower limb orthopedic pathologies such as joint replacement or knee ligament injuries. Subjects would take part in two 1 1⁄2 hour data collections that would involve a variety of tasks including walking, attention and verbal tasks, like reading words or naming pictures projected on a screen. For participation, subjects will receive a full analysis of their gait profile.

Data will be collected using the state-of-the-art laboratory-based motion capture system identical to the equipment used for motion picture special effects and video games. Collections will take place at a scheduled time during the next few weeks.

Further details will be provided to any interested parties. For further information, contact Sara Myers at 554.3225 or sfagan@mail.unomaha.edu or Dr. Leslie Decker at 554.3442 or ldecker@mail.unomaha.edu.
