Flag Lowering

The UNO flags are lowered to half-staff today, June 26, in honor of recent graduate April Bishop, who passed away last weekend.

Bishop, 21, participated in UNO's May commencement ceremony. A campus memorial service will take place in the Strauss Performing Arts Center Recital Hall tonight at 7 p.m.

Her funeral was held yesterday, June 25, in Plattsmouth, Neb., at First Presbyterian Church.

UNO Collaborates for Temporary Art Exhibition

UNO has collaborated with the AIM Institute and the Organization for the Advancement of Arts to feature emerging Omaha artists.

The Exchanges Gallery – 1905 Harney Street, Suite 215 – will host "The Closing Bell: Emerging Omaha Artists" now through Friday, June 27.

UNO art faculty members Russ Nordman and Jody Boyer have helped coordinate the exhibition series. The featured works are by emerging Omaha artists who work in conventional and nonconventional venues.

"The Closing Bell: Emerging Omaha Artists" is open for viewing June 26-27 from 1 to 5 p.m. A closing reception is planned from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 27.

"Consider This" to Explore Respite Programs in Nebraska

On the next edition of "Consider This" a glimpse at respite programs and services available in Nebraska, as well as a day in the life of a family caregiver.

"Respite is defined as temporary, short-term relief from care giving for a parent, child or other individual who has special circumstances or special needs that require ongoing care," said host Cathy Wyatt.

Wyatt's guests include Chris Stewart, Eastern Area for the Nebraska Respite Network, Dennis Byars, former state senator, Joni Thomas; Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services; and Karen Berna, a family caregiver.

The program airs tonight, June 26, at 11 p.m. on NET1.

NBDC Offers Online Classes

UNO's Nebraska Business Development Center (NBDC) offers a variety of online classes for at-work and/or personal enrichment. Here's just a sample of what is offered.

Starting Wednesday, July 16, two lessons will be offered each week for the next five weeks. The cost is $90 per session.

They are:
- Introduction to Natural Health and Healing
- Effective Business Writing
- Administrative Assistant Fundamentals
- Introduction to Windows Vista
- Personal Finance

Annual Fall New Faculty/Graduate Assistant Workshops Set for Aug. 18-19

The 2008 new faculty workshop and graduate assistant workshops, sponsored by the Center for Faculty Development (CFD), will take place Monday, Aug. 18. The faculty workshop continues Tuesday, Aug. 19.

"These workshops have been a tradition at UNO for more than 30 years," said Deborah Smith-Howell, associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and dean for Graduate Studies. "It provides new faculty and new teaching assistants with an opportunity to meet one another in an informal setting while learning about UNO—our metropolitan mission and strategic goals, our students, our academic support services, and faculty development opportunities."

Summer Motorcycle Parking Notice

Additional seasonal motorcycle parking is available for faculty, staff and students through Friday, Aug. 22. Motorcycles may park at the following locations on the Dodge, Pacific and Center Street campuses:

- Parking structure (stop by Campus Security, 100 Eppley Administration Building, for details);

- Northwest corner of Lot A (north of Kayser Hall);

- Northwest corner of Lot M (south of Criss Library);

- Southwest corner of Lot 2 (north of The University of Nebraska Peter Kiewit Institute); and

- West of the dome in Lot 20 (Center Street Location).
