Henningson Memorial Campanile Concert

UNO carilloneur James Johnson performed a concert April 30 in honor of the late Margre Henningson Durham on the mechanical keyboard at the top of the Henningson Memorial Campanile.

Chancellor to Receive Alumni Achievement Citation

The UNO Alumni Association will bestow its Citation for Alumnus Achievement upon UNO Chancellor John Christensen during the university's spring commencement Friday, May 9, at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.

Dr. Christensen was named UNO's 14th chancellor on May 8, 2007, becoming the first UNO graduate and first Omaha native to lead the institution. He had been serving as interim chancellor since September 2006. Read more.

UNO Softball Claims Final NCC Title

Mavericks

The UNO softball team claimed the final North Central Conference (NCC) title May 4, after outlasting Minnesota Duluth, 5-2, in nine innings and shutting out Minnesota State, 5-0, in the championship game. Read more.

French Film Festival to Conclude May 11

The French-American Cultural Exchange (FACE) and the UNO Department of Foreign Languages invite members from the UNO community to the final screening in the French Film Festival series on Sunday, May 11. "Comme une image," which is free and open to the public, will be screened at 2 p.m. in the Eppley Administration Building Auditorium. Read more.

Information Technology Services (ITS) staff have announced a series of myBlackboard training sessions for May. All UNO faculty and staff are welcome, and all sessions will take place in Roskens Hall, room 007B.

Handouts for these sessions can be found on the "Instructor Help" tab at http://myuno.unomaha.edu. It is recommended that participants read the handouts prior to attending class.  

To register for one of these Blackboard sessions (from on campus):

- Go to: http://api.unomaha.edu/calendar.php;

- Select the "Month" and click "Go"; 

- Click on the "Register" link next to the course. 

- Enter a SAP Personnel number. (This is the five-digit number on employee picture ID.  It is also on all paycheck stubs.)

- Click "Sign Up" and click "OK" to confirm the personnel number.  An e-mail will be sent to confirm this registration.  

A minimum of five people signed up by 2 p.m. the day prior to the class is required.  An e-mail notification will be sent, if a class is cancelled.

Summer Permit Parking Available in Church Lot

UNO employees with faculty/staff parking permits can park in the St. Margaret Mary's Church parking lot at 6116 Dodge St. this summer. Parking will be available there in UNO-designated lots May 12 through Aug. 22.

During the fall and spring semesters, parking at this location is limited to student permit holders. Night-only permits will not be honored until after 12:30 p.m.

Summer and Fall Book Orders Due to Bookstore

The UNO Bookstore staff would like to remind faculty to turn in summer and fall book orders as soon as possible.

"By turning in book orders early, the Bookstore is able to save students money by buying back books and searching for used textbooks," said Scott Dickey, manager of course materials.

SPR to Host May 15 Grant Writing Workshop

UNO's Office of Sponsored Programs and Research will offer a Grant Writing Workshop open to all UNO faculty and staff. The all-day session, which includes lunch, starts at 9 a.m. in the Centennial Room of the William H. and Dorothy Thompson Alumni House.

Robert Porter, director of the proposal development team at Virginia Tech, will lead the workshop day. During his visit to UNO, Dr. Porter will present "Writing Successful Grants" in the morning and "Strategies for Success in Sponsored Research" during the afternoon. Space is limited. There is no charge for the workshop, but registration by Friday, May 9, is required.

With 30 years' experience as a tenured professor, private consultant and research administrator, Dr. Porter has been awarded more than $5 million in grants from government agencies and private foundations. He has presented award-winning papers at major conferences and has published articles in the Journal of Research Administration. In addition, through his company, Grant Winners Seminars, he has conducted workshops at universities and medical schools nationwide. Dr. Porter has previously taught at Swarthmore College, Lewis and Clark College and Susquehanna University. He holds graduate degrees in speech communications from the University of Michigan.

Communication Students Award Scholarships
A number of School of Communication students received scholarships from the Omaha Press Club Foundation April 25 during a ceremony at Creighton University.

Abigail Anson, a senior, received the Panko-Roberts/President's Memorial Scholarship.

Juniors Briana Gehrken and Nicole Bonk each received the John F. Davis Scholarship.

Cassy Loseke, a junior, received the Paul N. Williams Scholarship.

The Mark O. Gautier, Jr. Intern Award was presented to senior Tyler Kersting.

Junior Sara Whaley received the Stan Bond Scholarship.

Dave Ogden, School of Communication associate professor and a member of the Omaha Press Club Board of Directors, organized the event.

- UNO student Jason Schmitz has received the Mike Gillespie Scholarship for the 2008-09 school year from the Philosophy Program. He was recognized at an open house event hosted by the program on April 2.
