Adam Smith, a psychobiology graduate student, learned in early April that he had earned a prestigious three-year fellowship from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The focus of his research is on the neurobiology of social behavior. He works with marmoset monkeys, squirrel-sized primates from Brazil. Students Travel From India for Buffett's Annual Event
Students from UNO's sister university, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur, will travel to Omaha and New York City starting today, May 1, to participate in Warren Buffett's annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholders event, attend educational workshops at UNO and visit local firms.
This is the third year of an exchange program between UNO and Indian students. Vinod Gupta, founder of infoUSA, has sponsored each group's trip across the world for the past three years. Gupta, an IIT alumnus, started the Vinod Gupta School of Management at his alma mater in 1993. Read more.

The "book buy back" event in the UNO Bookstore begins today, May 1, and continues through Friday, May 9. Individuals must have a current university ID to participate.

Rod Oberle Retirement Reception Today
After 35 years of service to UNO, Rod Oberle, director of Human Resources, will be retiring. Join the department for a retirement reception today, May 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Ball Room.

CWS General Admission Ticket Booklets On Sale
The 2008 College World Series (CWS) takes place June 14-25 at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha. 2008 College World Series general admission ticket booklets are currently on sale in the UNO Athletic Ticket Office.

SPR to Host May 15 Grant Writing Workshop
UNO's Office of Sponsored Programs and Research will offer a Grant Writing Workshop open to all UNO faculty and staff on Thursday, May 15. The all-day session, which includes lunch, starts at 9 a.m. in the Centennial Room of the William H. and Dorothy Thompson Alumni Center.
Robert Porter, director of the proposal development team at Virginia Tech, will lead the workshop day. During his visit to UNO, Dr. Porter will present "Writing Successful Grants" in the morning and "Strategies for Success in Sponsored Research" during the afternoon. Space is limited. There is no charge for the workshop, but registration by Friday, May 9, is required.
With thirty years of experience as a tenured professor, private consultant and research administrator, Dr. Porter has been awarded more than $5 million in grants from government agencies and private foundations. He has presented award-winning papers at major conferences and has published articles in the Journal of Research Administration. In addition, through his company, GrantWinners Seminars, he has conducted workshops at universities and medical schools nationwide. Dr. Porter has previously taught at Swarthmore College, Lewis and Clark College and Susquehanna University. He holds graduate degrees in speech communications from the University of Michigan.

Call-for-Proposals for the 2008 CUMU Conference
The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) has issued a call for proposals for its 2008 conference. This year's conference, hosted by University of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University is titled "The Metropolitan University of the 21st Century: Building Bridges to Regional Stewardship."
UNO is among the 80 participating CUMU institutions. Founded in 1982, CUMU's primary goal continues to be the enhancement of internal and external understanding of the metropolitan mission.
All conference abstracts should be submitted online at http://www.uc.edu/conferencing/events/cumu/abstracts. The deadline for consideration is Thursday, May 15, 2008. Additional Oct. 18-21 conference information will be made available at a later date at http://www.cumuonline.org/conference.
