Mavericks Split with Falcons

Omaha's Civic Auditorium was the venue last weekend, February 16-17 as UNO hosted the Bowling Green Falcons. The Mavericks won the Friday night contest 5-3 with UNO senior Brandon Scero scoring the winning goal. The Falcons took the game Saturday night with a 3-1 score. UNO goalie Jerad Kaufmann had 28 saves in the contest. UNO finishes up the CCHA regular season this weekend at Northern Michigan.

UNO Mavericks Dominate Minnesota Mavericks

UNO's wrestling team won eight of ten matches Friday night to beat Minnesota State-Mankato 32-7. UNO heavyweight Tony Lewis was named North Central Conference wrestler of the week for his three overtime victory in the match.

Third Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance Search Candidate to Visit Campus Today, Tomorrow

John Patterson, vice president for Administration and Campus Life at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan., will visit UNO and be interviewed for the position of vice chancellor for Business and Finance starting today, Feb. 25. Patterson is one of four finalists.

First Finalist for Dean of College of Arts and Sciences on Campus Today

Marshall Sundberg, professor of biology at Emporia State University, Emporia, Kan., will visit UNO and be interviewed for the position of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences starting today, Feb. 25. Sundberg is one of four finalists.

Faculty, staff, students and the public can attend an open session during his campus visit today from 4 to 5:15 p.m. in 438 Arts and Sciences Hall.

The three other finalists are: David Boocker, chair and professor in the Department of English and Journalism at Western Illinois University, Macomb, Ill.; Steven Haggbloom, department head and professor of Psychology at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Ky.; and Susan Maher, chair and professor of English at UNO.

Dr. Boocker visits campus March 11-12; Dr. Haggbloom on March 13-14; and Dr. Maher on March 24-25.

Dr. Sundberg earned his doctorate and master's degrees from the University of Minnesota. Prior to his post at Emporia State University, Sundberg worked at Louisiana State University.

B.J. Reed, dean of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, has chaired the search committee.

Scholarship to Honor Brittany Williams' Memory and Benefit UNO

Although Brittany Williams' life was tragically cut short, her dream of pursuing a higher education will live on through a memorial scholarship established to benefit students attending UNO.

The Brittany Williams Memorial Scholarship commemorates the life and spirit of a young woman who was the first in her family to attend college. Williams was a student at UNO, studying pre-nursing, at the time of her death. Read more.

Carl Schramm to Highlight Nebraska Summit on Entrepreneurship

Internationally known entrepreneurship expert Carl Schramm will highlight the second annual Nebraska Summit on Entrepreneurship today, Feb. 25, when hundreds of educators, business leaders, government officials, entrepreneurs and small business owners from across the state will gather at the Qwest Center in Omaha.

The event – co-sponsored by the University of Nebraska, the Gallup Organization and the Nebraska Business-Higher Education Forum – brings together state leaders from the public and private sector, policy makers and business leaders, as well as a variety of speakers, group discussion and the unveiling of a new book about entrepreneurship in Nebraska. National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day Today

The UNO community can celebrate National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day today, Feb. 25. Individuals who complete one of the activities listed below will receive a free apple, orange or banana in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Building or in Student Health Services on the first floor of the Milo Bail Student Center.

National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day activities include the following:

- Going for a jog or walk with a friend;

- Biking to/from work;

- Taking the stairs;

- Eating five fruits and vegetables;

- Avoiding smoking all day;

- Getting your blood pressure checked at Student Health Services from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; or

- Taking advantage of the HPER facilities or attending a Group Ex class.

- Get a nutritional consultation with Julie Denker, dietician in Student Health Services, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Theatre Department "New Ways/New Works" Festival Begins

The Theatre Department will present the "New Ways/New Works" festival, featuring new plays and new ways of theatre performance, today, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 2, and Wednesday through Sunday, March 5-9.

Five plays selected from more than 300 submissions from 36 states and four countries, including South Africa, will debut at the festival. Read more.

The Sponsored Programs and Research (SPR) Report details the results of UNO's work to obtain external funding in support of its teaching, research, service and outreach efforts. Writing Center Offers Workshop on "Strategies for Organizing Your Paper" Feb. 26

The UNO Writer's Workshop will host "From Chaos to Clarity: Strategies for Organizing Your Paper" Tuesday, Feb. 26, in 150 Arts and Sciences Hall.

UNO Writing Center consultants Sam Evans and Harley Trimble will present the workshop, which runs from noon to 12:50 p.m. Participants are invited to bring lunch. Cookies and coffee will be provided.

Guest Speaker Will Discuss Eating Disorders on Feb. 27

Student Health Services and the UNO Counseling Center will sponsor a guest speaker who will discuss identifying eating disorders on Wednesday, Feb. 27. National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Feb. 24 through March 1.

Sarah L. Ruma, M.S., L.M.H.P., from Children's Hospital Behavioral Health, will focus her presentation on "at risk" behaviors and how to detect an eating disorder, including: anorexia, bulimia nervosa and/or binge eating disorder.

She will also provide tips for family and friends on how and where to seek help.

Women of Color Award Luncheon Registrations Due Feb. 27

A veteran entertainer, procurement specialist, community volunteer, professor, client manager and student are the 2008 recipients of the UNO Women of Color Awards.

The group will be honored at a luncheon Wednesday, March 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at DC Centre, 11830 Stonegate Circle. The sixth annual event is sponsored by UNO and State Farm Insurance. This year's theme is "Women in Politics." The guest speaker is Washington, D.C., strategic thinker Esther Aguilera.

Fine Arts Friday Set for Feb. 29

The UNO Art Gallery and UNO Theatre join forces Friday, Feb. 29 to present "Fine Arts Friday," an evening of fine arts focusing on the distinctive vision of UNO's visual and performing arts offerings.

Patrons can begin the evening at 6:30 p.m. at the UNO Art Gallery for the opening reception of "Printed in Omaha: A Retrospective Exhibition of the UNO Print Workshop." Read more.
