Mavericks Defeat Fighting Sioux

UNO basketball hosted the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota Saturday at the Sapp Fieldhouse. In the men's game, the Maverick's Andrew Bridger had 16 points and 10 assists in UNO's 84-69 win. The Maverick men and women are on the road Thursday at Augustana and back home Saturday afternoon at 2 and 4 p.m. against St. Cloud State.

Decorating the Dorms

Representatives from Bed, Bath and Beyond and the UNO Bookstore contributed their products and expertise last week in one of the new rooms at Maverick Village. The model room is being prepared for campus recruiting visits on February 1.

UNO's Amanda Brodsack led the Maverick scoring with 13 points. Final Senior Vice Chancellor Search Candidate Visit Jan. 30-31

Suzanne Ortega, dean of the University of Washington Graduate School and vice provost, will visit UNO and be interviewed for the position of senior vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs today and tomorrow, Jan. 30-31.

Dr. Ortega is one of four finalists.

Several public events have been planned for her two-day campus visit. All faculty, staff, students and members of the public are encouraged to attend and take part in any or all of the meetings. Read more.

Governor Proclaims February Children's Seat Belt Awareness Month

Gov. Dave Heineman signed a proclamation Jan. 22 declaring the month of February Children's Seat Belt Awareness Month in Nebraska.

The proclamation, written by a team of four UNO public relations students, kicks off a campaign to promote seat belt safety among children ages 11 to 14. Read more.

2008 Spring Study Abroad Fair Today in the MBSC

The 2008 Spring Study Abroad Fair will take place today, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the MBSC Fireplace Lounge. The event will feature study abroad learning opportunities for the summer and 2008-09 academic year.

SHS to Promote Healthy Hearts this February

UNO Student Health Services (SHS) will team with the American Heart Association (AHA) in February to promote heart health in women.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to dress in red clothing Friday, Feb. 1, in observance of National Wear Red Day.

Julie Denker, SHS graduate assistant, will discuss ways to keep hearts healthy Thursday, Feb. 7, from noon to 1 p.m. at "Go Red for Women" in the Milo Bail Student Center Gallery Room. Red dress pins also will be available for a $5 donation. Money from pin sales supports heart research and education.

Women's Resource Center to Host Open House Feb. 6-7

The Women's Resource Center will hold an open house Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 6-7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All interested faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

WRC is a student-run agency, which facilitates events and offers free services to the UNO community throughout the academic year. WRC offices are located on the first floor of the Milo Bail Student Center.

COS Demonstration Today for Grant Writers

The Office of Sponsored Programs and Research (SPR) will host a Community of Science (COS) open lab demonstration today, Jan. 30, at 9 a.m. in Room 207 of Criss Library.

SPR hosts these monthly hour-long sessions to demonstrate the various COS online resources available to faculty, professional staff and graduate students who are planning to write grant proposals during this academic year. Reservations are not required.

2008 Diversity Week Continues

Faculty, staff and students at UNO will have an opportunity to learn about cultures other than their own through Thursday, Jan. 31, during 2008 Diversity Week.

The sixth annual event - coordinated by the American Multicultural Student Agency (AMS), a Student Government agency, and Student Organizations and Leadership Programs (SOLP) - features a variety of multiethnic artistic presentations and performances. "Understanding the Reappointment, Promotion & Tenure Process" Panel Discussion Feb. 1

The Center for Faculty Development Pre-Tenure Mentoring group will host a panel discussion on "Understanding the Reappointment, Promotion & Tenure (RPT) Process," Friday, Feb. 1, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Council Room.

Panel participants include B.J. Reed, dean of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service; John Bartle, director and professor of the School of Public Administration; Melissa Berke, chair of the UNO Department of Music; Juan Casas, associate professor of psychology; and Kris Swain, associate professor of special education and communication disorders.

Topics will include:

- An overview of university guidelines;
- General deadlines;
- Beginning a portfolio;
- Planning for the tenure process; and
- A preview of myMAPP.

Strategic Planning Forum Set for February

For the past 11 years, UNO has actively engaged in strategic planning. As part of the ongoing process, a forum has been planned for Friday, Feb. 15. The campus community is invited to participate and assist with UNO's continual improvement.
