Writing Across the Curriculum Faculty Seminar Applications Available

UNO faculty are invited to participate in a two-day seminar on Writing Across the Curriculum. The seminar, to be held in the William H. and Dorothy Thompson Alumni Center on Tuesday, Jan. 8, and Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, will give faculty an opportunity to consider WAC's twin objectives – using writing tasks to promote students' understanding of course material in any discipline (writing to learn), and integrating writing tasks across the curriculum in order to support students' development as writers (learning to write).

On Tuesday, interactive sessions will address the challenges students face when they undertake academic writing tasks, from comprehending difficult reading assignments to evaluating, integrating, and citing information from print and electronic sources. Wednesday sessions focus on best practices for responding to and evaluating students' papers. Participants will bring papers written by their own students, compare their assessments to those of their colleagues, and consider similarities and differences across disciplines.

The Center for Faculty Development has provided the support for the seminar. Participants will receive $250 directed to their departments for travel and other professional expenses. A brief application form is posted on the UNO Writing Center Web site, on the Faculty Resources page: http://www.unomaha.edu/writingcenter/faculty.php. Applications are due Wednesday, Nov. 28.

For more information, contact Nora Bacon, WAC coordinator; Dorianne Richards, Writing Center director; or Kathy Danielson, WAC advisory committee member.
