This Week in Campus History
On July 13, 1984, The Gateway reported that UNO students David Dechant and John Hicks co-wrote a play entitled "The Unlikely Undertaking." The play had recently been published by the Chicago-based Dramatic Publishing Company, the second largest publisher of theatrical materials. A funeral home serves as the play's setting, and the action begins when the owner, who wishes to impress an influential visitor, cremates the wrong body.

Calming the Anxious
by Tim Fitzgerald
Almost everyone suffers from it. Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy and Barbara Walters have had it and overcome it. "A Total Commitment" Conference Set for July 13-15 at UNO
A national conference will be held at UNO Thursday through Saturday, July 13-15, as a tool for those who work with children in physical activity settings. "A Total Commitment" will feature a variety of presenters and demonstrations that will share practical and innovative ideas for programming, modifying activities and equipment, and offer motivational ideas for individuals with disabilities.
"The conference is designed to provide participants with a forum for sharing practical, creative and innovative ideas on programming and activities in use today," said Mike Messerole, an assistant professor in the UNO School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) and conference coordinator.
Events will take place in the HPER Building on the UNO campus. Conference registration materials can be found on the Web at http://coe.unomaha.edu/atc/register.php.
Brent Rasmussen will be the keynote speaker on July 13. Rasmussen, president of Mortgage Specialists, LLC, is an Omaha native and a graduate of Ralston High School. He earned his bachelor of science degree in small business management with an emphasis in finance from UNO.
A standout athlete at UNO, Rasmussen was picked up as a free agent with the Kansas City Royals. Three years after his last athletic stint with the Gulf Coast Royals, Rasmussen was injured while stopping to help a stranded motorist. The accident left him with an amputated left foot, a shattered right ankle and a 16-inch rod in his right femur.
After the accident, Rasmussen continued to participate in athletics and has excelled at sitting volleyball as well as wheelchair softball and basketball. Rasmussen was a member of the 2004 Paralympic Men's Sitting Volleyball Team and World Championship Team, and was captain of the 2006 World Championship Men's Sitting Volleyball Team. He has been an ambassador for sitting volleyball in the United States and started a sitting volleyball club in Omaha.
Other featured speakers include Lauren Lieberman, author, educator and Camp Abilities director; and Cindy Combs, the 2006 American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year. A modified bicycle demonstration and a presentation by the Red Dawgs Wheelchair Bicycle Team are planned for July 15.
