Welcome to the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Department of English website. This portal gives you access to one of UNO’s most vital programs. Undergraduate majors in our department benefit greatly from an innovative three-track program that lets students select British Literature, American Literature, or Writing and Linguistics as their emphasis. These tracks are aligned through a Core Curriculum and reach
Susan Mahercompletion in a Senior Capstone Seminar. The English major combines the benefit of maximum flexibility with the strength of a coherent design. Graduate students, with help from their advisors, self-design their MA program. Because graduate students at UNO enter our MA program with diverse goals and objectives, we are able to offer a meaningful experience to individuals continuing on into PhD, MFA, or other professional programs; to professionals seeking new credentials or endorsements; or to individuals desiring the personal, intellectual challenge of graduate-level work. Certificate programs in Advanced Writing, Technical Communication, and TESOL allow non-degree students to gain expertise in these professional areas.
The UNO English faculty ranks as one of the most accomplished at the university. Among our faculty are nationally and internationally recognized scholars and creative writers, award-winning teachers, and leaders in professional organizations and peer-reviewed publications. The UNO English faculty helps create the knowledge that is shaping our discipline in the 21st century. As a result, they have proved able mentors to students, helping undergraduate and graduate students gain real experience presenting research or creative writing at regional and national conferences, publishing original work, or producing cutting-edge technical documents for service-writing clients. Our English faculty is committed to giving students both a first-rate education and a memorable, dynamic experience.
Finally, through its commitment to excellence in teaching and service, the Department of English at UNO works to increase the general literacy and cultural awareness of UNO students and also the citizens of Omaha and its immediate surroundings. Our service responsibilities make us a vital component of the university’s core mission to serve students, to promote academic excellence, and to engage with the community. Faculty involvement in the Service Learning Academy, in area public high schools, in city- and state-wide reading events, in public readings and lectures, and in area literary competitions is considerable. The UNO English department embodies the university’s motto: Connect—Collaborate—Create. Welcome to our homepage and to our program.
