
Students must apply to the UNO Graduate College to be admitted to the Graduate TESOL Certificate program.
Admission
- Admission to the program will require a baccalaureate degree with at least a 3.0 GPA.
- Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 600 or 250 on the computer-based test to be eligible for conditional admission.
- Students may be required to take 1-3 foundation English courses at the undergraduate level if in their undergraduate program their coursework did not include two or more English courses beyond the freshman composition requirement.
REQUIREMENTS Students admitted to this program must complete five courses (15 semester credit hours). Although they have a great deal of flexibility in the order of their courses, students should take the fundamental course Introduction to Linguistics first. The following list is a suggested order for courses:
- ENGL 8616 Introduction to Linguistics (fall, spring)
- ENGL 8656 Structure of English (fall)
- ENGL 8696 Topics in Linguistics—Applied Linguistics (spring)
- TED 8006 Special Methods—ESL (fall) or equivalent
- ENGL 8676 Sociolinguistics
Note :
- The Linguistics faculty strongly recommend that native speakers of English become proficient in a foreign language.
- Students may substitute up to three required core courses already taken at the 4000 level for approved 8000 level courses. A student wishing to substitute core 4000 level TESOL Certificate courses must obtain permission from the Director for TESOL Certificates. The following are approved courses:
- ENGL 8696: Topics in Linguistics
- (one course from approved topics)
- ENGL 8740: Discourse Analysis
- ENGL 8756 Composition Theory and Practice
- (or ENGL 8800 TA Seminar)
- ENGL 8816 Digital Literacies for Technical Communication
- (or ENGL 8836 Technical Communication)
- FLNG 8020 Sem: EFL/TESOL Research
- FLNG 8030 Sem: Second Language Acquisition ( SLA) Theory
- FLNG 8040 Sem: Assessment & Materials Design
- TED 8250 Assessment for the Classroom Teacher (spring)
- TED Elective in Instructional Technology {one course from 8540 (fall & sum), 8550 spring) 8560 (fall), 8570 (fall & sum), 8580 (spring), 8770 (spring)}
