A teaching assistantship is a competitive scholarship offered to qualified graduate students seeking the MA in English.
The Department of English offers up to15 graduate teaching assistantships each year. The next deadline for application will be February, 2009 (exact date will be announced).
Teaching assistants in the Department of English generally teach in the first year composition program and work as consultants in the Writing Center. The assignments, however, can vary based on individual experience and departmental need.
Along with tuition reimbursement, teaching assistants receive a monthly stipend at month’s end from August through May. The current stipend amount for the 2008-2009 academic year is slightly over $11,000. Assistants are prepared for classroom teaching by means of a workshop that begins two weeks before the first day of the fall semester, and a fall-semester seminar. Participation in both the workshop and the seminar is mandatory. Assistantships can be renewed for an additional full academic year based on satisfactory performance.
For more information, including the application process, please contact Dr. Joan Latchaw, Chair of the Graduate Program Committee in the Department of English, at 402-554-3309.
