English Placement & Proficiency Exam

The Department of English currently offers a variety of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students.

Undergraduate.

Through the generous donations of university benefactors, the Department of English is able to offer three different undergraduate scholarships to qualified students.

Marian Basler and Helen Basler Anderson Scholarships

English majors can qualify for either scholarship if they have junior or senior standing, have completed at least 18 hours of English at UNO, and carry a grade point average of 3.0 in English courses.

James C. Horejs Scholarship

English majors qualify for this award if they have junior or senior standing; however, traditionally faculty have awarded the Horejs Scholarship to students who had additionally obtained a 3.0 average in English courses.

The scholarships are awarded annually if and when funds are available. Each spring, English department faculty members make final award decisions.

Graduate.

The English Departments offers graduate students the opportunity to apply to graduate teaching assistantships. These competitive scholarships are awarded each spring for the following academic year and are renewable for up to an additional year. Benefits include full tuition remission and a monthly stipend paid over 10 months. More information can be found here.

The UNO English Department and University of Nebraska Foundation also support annual graduate fellowship awards which memorialize certain individuals who were friends of the department or who contributed professionally to its programs or development.

Graduate students pursuing the Master of Arts in English UNO may apply for the yearly award.
