Independent Study (ENGL-4980 and ENGL-8900) is reserved for special circumstances when there is no course in the current rotation that covers the targeted material and if faculty have the time, inclination, and expertise to take on the extra demands of working one-on-one with the student requesting an Independent Study.
English majors and minors in are eligible to take Independent Study if they have junior or senior standing and have no outstanding incompletes. English graduate students are eligible to take Independent Study if they have admission to candidacy and have no outstanding incompletes. Students who wish to embark on Independent Study should work closely with a faculty member who will agree to direct their study. Students are limited to a total of six credit hours of Independent Study. Independent Study is rarely available to students outside of the English Department and is never available for general education courses offered on a regular basis, like Composition I or II, ENGL-1150 or -1160.
A student who successfully appeals to a faculty member to direct an independent study will need to submit an independent study contract, designed in coordination with the faculty member, to the English Dept. main office, in ASH 192 (see staff assistant Jill Sutton). Only after the contract has been signed by the instructor and the department chair will the student be given a permission number to enroll in the Independent Study credit for the given semester.
