Welcome to the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Graduate Certification in Advanced Writing program. Started in January 2003, as a part of the University English Department, the Advanced Writing Certification has become the fastest growing certification program within the University system. 

Since 2003, on an average, 10 Master of Arts students each year have graduated from the certification program. Currently there are 35 enrolled students in the program. The Graduate Certification in Advanced Writing is designed for the following students:

• Writers interested in developing and publishing their creative nonfiction;
• Graduate students in English and related fields;
• Educators seeking writing-specific training and credentials;
• Professionals who work in community service organizations;
• Members of organizations dedicated to cultural activities in the community;
• Working professionals who either are currently employed or will be seeking employment as experts in written communication;
• Governmental employees.

Students must earn a grade of "B" (3.0 on a 4/0 scale) or better in each course applied toward the 15 credits required for the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Writing.

Upon acceptance into the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Writing, students are assigned a faculty advisor to mentor them in their progress toward completion of the certificate program. Faculty work closely with students in selecting courses, planning an effective sequence of courses, and compiling the writing portfolio required for graduation. The faculty believe in establishing a warm and effective mentoring relationship with students. Good mentoring is a key element in enabling students to find the writing path that is right for them.
