Requests for interpreters for semester course

Make an appointment with your advisor early so you are ready to register during priority registration.

Request interpreters for semester classes by providing the interpreter coordinator with a copy of the semester schedule including the date, time, location, and instructor as soon as possible after course registration.

Notify interpreter coordinator of schedule changes immediately!

DSO may determine alternative appropriate accommodations when necessary and/or appropriate.

Requests for interpreters for other assignments

DSO should be notified as soon as possible in advance for other University related interpreting requests.  Every attempt will be made to secure an interpreter when requested.

The student is responsible to request interpreters for outside of class projects, not the instructor or the interpreters.  The student may ask the interpreter about their availability, but it is ultimately up to the student to request the interpreter from DSO.   All interpreter requests must be approved in advance by DSO or interpreter will not be sent.

Non-class related requests will be approved on a case by case basis.

Interpreter request forms can be found at: www.unomaha.edu/disability/interpreter.

Failure to secure an interpreter

If time allows, the interpreter coordinator will discuss alternative accommodations with the student when an interpreter cannot be secured.  This may include an audiotape of the event for later interpretation, transcription or a note taker.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

General Student Responsibilities

Provide appropriate documentation.

Agree to automatic notification or complete a semester authorization form.

Meet with instructors.  DSO will send official notification of your approved accommodations to your instructors via email.  As a student you are responsible for discussing your accommodations with your instructors.

DSO recommends you contact your instructors immediately after course registration to ensure videos are captioned.  Captioning is a lengthy process, the earlier you contact your instructor the less the chance of delays.

Provide DSO with the name of the production company, title and copyright year of video.

Notify DSO of changes to your schedule, instructor or room changes, cancellation of classes and any other information which affects services.

Contact the interpreter coordinator if you have concerns or problems.

Cancellation Procedure

When you will not be able to attend a class or event which an interpreter is scheduled please contact Stephanie Vik-Richart at: svikrichart@unomaha.edu OR send her a text message at (402) 218-3686. (For summer courses, contact Kate Clark at: mjackson@unomaha.edu or text message at the same number, (402) 218-3686).

If neither of these methods is accessible to you, please phone the DSO by calling (402) 554-2872 or use the TTY (402) 554-3799.

Include the following information:  Your name and the class(es)or event(s) you will miss.

DSO procedure for missed classes

DSO will contact student after one absence for non-notification of absence to remind them of student policy.

Interpreters may be removed from classes after non-notification of absence two times in a semester.  Student must meet with the Disability Services Coordinator before services are reinstated.  DSO will consider each non-notification on a case by case basis.

When a student is tardy to or misses 1/3 of class meetings during the course of a semester DSO may suspend services.  This applies to excessive tardiness and/or excessive absences, even if the student calls in.  Our resources are limited and we need to utilize them to best serve all of our students.

If student disagrees with coordinator’s decision they may contact Sharon Ulmar, the campus ADA/504 Coordinator at sulmar@unomaha.edu.
