Speech Communication

The Division of Continuing Studies offers the Bachelor of General Studies degree with an area of concentration in Speech Communication.

Required:

30 hours from the department of speech (SPCH)

  • SPCH 2010 or 2410
  • No less than 9 hours upper division from UNO
  • SPCH 1110 cannot be used in this concentration

Optional:

An allied field of 1-9 hours from ONE of the following areas may be used as part of the 30 hours in the area of concentration:

  • Journalism (JOUR)
  • Broadcasting (BRCT)

Additional information:
Students interested in graduate studies should contact the graduate chair in the School of Communication to make sure necessary classes are taken to enter graduate programs.

National Certification in Nonprofit Management and Leadership is available. Requirements may be met through coursework in your core requirement. Please see an advisor for details.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

No course from a two-year institution which is also offered as an upper division course at UNO can be used in the area of concentration.

Career Information:
An area of concentration in speech communication provides a study in public speaking and communication, both verbal and nonverbal, in a variety of settings. Speech communication can prepare students for careers in business, public relations, advertising, human resources, government, education, media, marketing, training/development, and social services. Speech communication can also prepare students for law school and other advanced/professional degrees.
