Communication Studies

The Division of Continuing Studies offers the Bachelor of General Studies degree with an area of concentration in Communication Studies.

Required:

  • 30 hours from the department of speech (SPCH)
  • 9 hours upper division from UNO

  • SPCH 2010 (Interpersonal Communication) or 2410 (Small Group Communication)
  • SPCH 4510 Persuasion
  • Choose one of the following courses:
    • SPCH 3120 Persuasive Speaking
    • SPCH 3130 Speech Communication for Business and Professions
    • SPCH 3140 Advanced Public Speaking
    • SPCH 3520 Interviewing
    • SPCH 3150 or SPCH 3160 Intercollegiate Forensic Activities
  • SPCH 1110 cannot be used in this concentration

Recommended:

Students are recommended to choose a 9 hour core from the School of Communication current emphasis areas in the Speech Communication major.

Additional information:

Students interested in graduate studies should contact the graduate chair in the School of Communication to make sure necessary classes are taken to enter graduate programs.

National Certification in Nonprofit Management and Leadership is available. Requirements may be met through coursework in your core requirement. Please see an advisor for details.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

No course from a two-year institution which is also offered as an upper division course at UNO can be used in the area of concentration.

Career Information:
An area of concentration in speech communication provides a study in public speaking and communication, both verbal and nonverbal, in a variety of settings. Speech communication can prepare students for careers in business, public relations, advertising, human resources, government, education, media, marketing, training/development, and social services. Speech communication can also prepare students for law school and other advanced/professional degrees.
