2007.11.27 -- CPACS Faculty Collaborating on Community Middle School Initiative. Three UNO faculty members recently completed a comprehensive assessment of after-school program needs in the Omaha Public Schools (OPS) district. Jerry Deichert, director of the Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR); Karen Rolf, an assistant professor in the UNO School of Social Work; and Russell Smith, an associate professor of public administration with CPAR, did the assessment as part of their work in support of a$162,000 Middle School Learning Center Initiative research contract with the city of Omaha. The initiative combines resources from the Sherwood Foundation, city of Omaha, OPS and the federal government.

The Alliance was formed to help the City of Omaha ensure the community's needs are reflected in city planning. Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey selected the Benson Alliance as the first district to develop a neighborhood plan as outlined in the 2004 Omaha by Design: Urban Design Element. The Benson Alliance will serve as a model that will be used in 14 alliance areas in Omaha.
