The essence of Extenics is to transform various problems seemingly contradictory or insoluble to solvable problems according to the extension methods. The unique feature of Extenics is to theorize and systematic these extension methods with the goal of the computerization of solving contradictory issues. Though the history of Extenics research has only thirty years, it demonstrates the bright prospect.
People are handling various contradictory issues in social practice. However, Mathematics, researching mainly on quantitative relations and space forms, cannot be applied to solving plenty of contradictory issues. Therefore, researchers of Extenics have abstracted ordered triple (object, characteristics and magnitude) naming element describing substances in the world and relations among them. Take element as logic cell to build formalized method---Extension model which shows the contradictory issues and procedures to solve them. Information can be presented by element or arithmetic expression. Knowledge is the arithmetic expression of element in essence. The strategy of solving contradictory issues is extension expression. In order to enable computers to solve contradictory issues, researchers of Extenics build a system of extension information-knowledge-strategy on the basis of extension model.
In fact, lots of significant scientific conclusions in history, cognition gained by predecessors on the basis of scientific and technological development level at that moment, belong to relatively truth which indicated that nothing was eternally immutable since ancient times. With the advancement of science and technology, people may generate more profound cognition on some of the former scientific conclusions. Therefore, instead of accepting the scientific conclusions gained by predecessors blindly, it is necessary to inherit and develop them critically. Researchers of Extenics, adopting the attitude of critical inheritance to Mathematics, System Theory and Logic Theory and sticking to the spirit of scientific analysis, establish the Extenics.
Intelligence is the ability to solve problems. The Intellectual Revolution, by means of researching wisdom generation rule, is a plan to form rules and establish operable methods which enables people to propose new ideas on products and new solutions on contradictory issues; as well as a plan to “teach” this method to computer and network and enables them to help people form creative ideas which makes wisdom and intelligence no longer the patent of smart people. Intellectual Revolution has important significance on all walks of life including economics, politics and military. The development of computer and network provides material tools for the Intellectual Revolution. Extenics is expected to propose theoretical basis and operational approaches to start this Intellectual Revolution, the process of which will be closely bound up with the development of human society.
As a result, applying Extension Theory and innovation methods into the computer and network-intelligentizing has become the current frontier research which includes 1) researching and developing computers that can handle contradictory issues 2) researching network-intelligentizing technology and developing intelligent network that can handle contradictory issues by means of Extenic Theory and innovation methods and 3) researching and developing universal build platform of extension strategy and applying build software of extension strategy to specialized field.
Prof. Cai Wen, graduated from Sun-Yat-Sen University in 1964, is nominated among the national distinguished experts due to his prominent research work, the founder of the new subject - Extenics, chairman of the Board of Extension Engineering Society, Chinese Artificial Intelligent. From 1976, Prof. Cai started to study the law, theory and method for dealing with incompatible problems. The paper "Extension Set and Incompatible Problem", which was published in 1983, marked the birth of new science Extenics (originally called Matter-element Analysis). He directed and completed 5 National Science Fundamental Projects and 4 provincial projects which are partly listed as follows:
(1) Research on the Rules of Dealing with Contradictory Problems in Decision-making System
(2) The Theories and Methods of Transforming Bridge
(3) The Generate Methods and Coordination Problems of Key Strategy
(4) The Research on Basic Theories and Methods of The Extension Strategy Generate System
(5) The Research of Extension Marketing Methods
Prof. Cai also participated in the research of two National Science Fundamental Projects in China: “The Research of Theories and Methods of Extension Planning”, “Theories, methods and empirical research on extension data mining that obtaining changing knowledge.” His main monographs are “Extension Set and Extension Data Mining”, “Preliminary Extension Logic”, “Extension Marketing” (in simple and traditional Chinese), “Extension Engineering”, “Extension Engineering Methods” (in simple Chinese, traditional Chinese and English), "Matter-element Model and Its Application", “Matter-element Analysis” and “Creative Revolution”.
Professor Yang Chunyan, director of Research Institute of Extenics and Innovation Methods, Guangdong University of Technology, director of Extension Engineering Society of Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligent, director of Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, vice president of Guangdong Future Forecasting Seminar, corresponding evaluation expert of National Science Fundamental Project, 863 Project and Guangdong Natural Science Fundamental Project, one of the academic leaders of the Extenics researching field of China. She have been doing the research on the theory of Extenics and its application in management, decision making and artificial intelligence. She has published 70 more papers and 9 monographs including Extenics, Extension Engineering, Extension Data Mining and Its Computer Implementation, Extension Planning, Extension Strategy Generating System. Her main research directions include: Extenics, contradictory problem intelligent processing, extension data mining, knowledge management, decision making and strategy generation.
Xingsen Li received the M.Sc degree from China University of Mining and Technology Beijing in 2000, and the Ph.D. degree in management science and engineering from Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2008. He is currently a Professor in NIT, Zhejiang University and a director of Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) and the Secretary-General of Extension engineering committee, CAAI. He has authored two books about intelligent knowledge management and Extenics based data mining. His current research interests include intelligent knowledge management with big data, Extenics-based data mining and Extenics-based innovation.
